It comes after Granit Xhaka was heavily criticised for telling Arsenal supporters to ‘f*** off’ during the 2-2 draw at the weekend.

Xhaka was jeered as he left the pitch after being substituted in the second half.

The incident has led Arsenal boss Unai Emery to defend Xhaka, who has said the Switzerland international ‘is devastated and sad about the situation’.

Emery has spoken individually to Xhaka although it is not clear whether that relates to him holding onto the Arsenal captaincy.

Emery refused to say whether the 27-year-old would keep the armband but did admit on Tuesday how bad Xhaka felt about the situation.

‘It’s not easy for him and for the team,’ Emery said. ‘He is now devastated. Devastated and sad. We spoke yesterday and on Sunday night I also spoke.

‘This morning, he trained as normal with the group but he is devastated and he is sad about the situation.

‘His commitment with the club is a great commitment every time. He wants to help.

‘His behaviour was perfect in training, with the group and with the club. He knows he was wrong. He was wrong and he feels it inside very deeply. But that is normal as a human.’
