  • Radiation levels in the area are currently being checked, and it is unclear when residents will be allowed to return to their homes 

Around 40 homes in Ohio have been evacuated after a man called 911 claiming he had sustained ‘radio frequency burns’ while building a small homemade  nuclear reactor inside his garage. 

The evacuation order was issued for several streets in Northwest Columbus on Thursday night, as a bomb squad, arson fire investigators and medics rushed to the scene. 

Authorities say homes were evacuated out of ‘an abundance of caution’ and they do not believe the man ‘was trying to make anything that would do anyone any harm’.

The nuclear device has been described as ‘a ‘quantum physics generator’.

Chief Steve Martin, the Columbus Division of Fire spokesman, told The Columbus Dispatch that the man does not appear to be seriously injured. 

However, in his 911 call, the man referenced ‘alpha waves’, prompting fears from authorities. 

Radiation level checks were conducted on the man, but came back negative. 

Firefighters are taking readings in the area to ensure it is safe for residents to return.
