5-year-old NYC boy dies after falling out 3rd-floor window

  • A boy identified as William Chen was with his grandparents at the under-construction condominium building that they own in Corona, Queens, New York
  • Chen was with his grandparents on the 2nd floor and left them to use the restroom on the 3rd floor
  • He managed to get out of the bathroom via a window and fell to his death
  • The building, which was under construction, did not yet have window guards

A 5-year-old boy has died after falling out of a third-floor bathroom window at an under-construction New York City condominium, authorities say.

The boy, identified as William Chen, was playing on the third floor inside a Corona, Queens condominium complex near 99th street and 37th avenue on Sunday afternoon, NBC reports.

Chen was being watched by his grandparents on the second floor.

He went to the bathroom on the third floor and managed to get out of the window and fell sometime after 2.30pm.

The building, which is owned by Chen’s grandparents, was under construction and did not yet have any window guards.

He landed in a stairwell below.

A witness told NBC: ‘I saw one of the members of the family screaming the name of the boy and then I saw them coming downstairs.’

Chen was found unresponsive at the scene and and was rushed to Booth Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police officials say no arrests have been made and that an investigation into the fall is continuing.

A sub-contractor for the building told the New York Post: ‘He was always very happy.’
