He’s continued his prolific scoring form ever since and is still an important player for Barcelona today.

He has scored 34 goals in La Liga this season and has notched 10 times in the Champions League.

He will be aiming to score again when he and his team-mates take on Liverpool in the semi-finals of Europe’s premier competition on Wednesday night.

Asked about Messi ahead of the game at the Nou Camp, manager Ernesto Valverde said: ‘Lionel is feeling fine, and throughout this month we have been able to rest him more than others. 

‘We have been playing three games a week, we’ve played United and now it’s Liverpool. The workload is high but we are ready for this.’

Supporters of Messi, meanwhile, believe Wednesday night will be his time to shine.

‘600 incoming tonight,’ one user on Twitter posted. ‘And on this day in 2019, he will score his 600th,’ another added.
