Person is killed by train in rush-hour tragedy

Rail services ground to a halt after a person was hit by a train during the Monday morning rush hour.  

The fatality happened at Slough Railway Station at 8.50am today, and the rail network between Reading and London Paddington was closed soon after.

Thousands of commuters suffering amid ongoing strike action were left stranded and facing delays of around 90 minutes as services were cancelled.

All trains from Wales and the West Country bound for Paddington were halted at Reading.

And thousands of commuters were ordered off trains at Didcot, after Reading station became clogged with halted inter-city services, unable to move.  

A spokesman for the British Transport Police said: ‘Officers were called to Slough railway station at 8.51am this morning, following reports of a person being struck by a train.

‘Officers attended the scene alongside officers from Thames Valley Police and paramedics but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers are now working to identify her and inform her family. Inquiries are now underway to establish how this person came to be on the tracks and receive their fatal injuries.’

The lines were expected to be closed for several hours creating commuter chaos on the first day back to work for many following the new year holidays.

In a separate incident at 7am, a person was hit by a train between Weston-super-Mare and Bristol Temple Meads – also on the same Great Western Railway tracks. 

No details have yet been released about the incident.
