Schoolboy with ADHD hanged himself in his bedroom

A schoolboy was found hanged at home following an argument with his parents after they banned him from using his laptop computer, an inquest heard.

Connor Robertson, 12, was discovered in his bedroom by his brother on October 23 last year but died despite his father’s attempts to resuscitate him.

An inquest heard the family had just returned from a holiday where Connor had been barred from using the computer for using bad language.

The youngster went upstairs to his bedroom after they got back to their home in Castle Vale, Birmingham, and was found by his brother 20 minutes later.

Birmingham Coroners Court (pictured) heard the family had just returned from a holiday where Connor had been barred from using the computer for using bad language

Birmingham Coroner Louise Hunt recorded that Connor, who had attention deficit hyperactive disorder, died from an ‘impulsive self-inflicted act’.

She added: ‘We know Connor suffered from ADHD. He lived with his brother at home and we know he was on medication for his disorder.

‘It seems as if things were settling down a little bit. On the weekend before his death he had been away with his family to Wales and it went well and he had as good time.

‘He had used some bad language while he was away and was told he would not be able to use the computer. That had happened before.’

The coroner said the medical cause of death was hanging and added: ‘He suffered from ADHD which could make him impulsive.

‘It seems to me on all the evidence this was an impulsive act. I do not believe he intended to kill himself.’

His mother Jacqueline Robertson, 57, said her son was an ‘active child, a bit of a joker who loved his computers’.

She told Birmingham Coroners Court how he had been diagnosed with ADHD in 2011 and was on medication and had started secondary school last September.

She said: ‘He was not very happy going there and had a few problems, particularly with maths but the school were trying to sort it out.’

Mrs Robertson said the weekend before he died, the family had gone on a holiday in Wales.

She said: ‘There was no indication whatsoever he would do anything like that, We got back and we had a lovely weekend. I cannot understand it.’

Mrs Robertson said she had previously told her son he could not have his laptop and there had been some swearing.

He asked again when they got home at about 1.30pm but he was again refused and he went upstairs.

Mrs Robertson said: ‘It was about ten or 20 minutes and I had a cup of tea because we had been travelling for about three hours.

‘His brother went to go upstairs and said Connor had hung himself.’

She said her husband started chest compressions and CPR and an ambulance was called.

Mrs Robertson went on: ‘He was very adventurous. He would try different things. I think he may have done it just as a dare to himself.’
