The 23-year-old was taken to hospital after he was found unresponsive on a busy road in Kanwal.
Police believe the driver had no chance of avoiding Mr Riley as he had jumped a steel barrier onto the street.
‘Mystery surrounds why he was crossing the road at this stage, whether he saw the car or not we are unaware, that is under investigation,’ Chief Inspector Col Lott said.
Officers found the knife in question at the area where the CCTV footage was filmed.
They do not yet know why Mr Riley would have been in possession of the weapon.
The video shows Mr Riley backing off as three shirtless men close in on him. Two of the men are wearing white caps.
Mr Riley appears to be waving the blade at the aggressors as he continues to back away.
He then attempts to cross the adjacent road, where he is struck by an oncoming car.

A witness told Seven he came running after hearing shouts for help.
‘I saw someone jumping over [the rail], trying to jump the fence and I heard people screaming, ‘he’s been hit, he’s been hit, where’s the ambulance’,’ the man said.
Mr Riley underwent surgery on Monday but remains on life support.
