Meryl Streep, 68, arrives at The Post premiere in London

She plays the no-nonsense first female publisher of a major American newspaper in the highly-awaited Spielberg-directed flick.

And Meryl Streep, 68, proved she meaned business on the red carpet for the European premiere of her new movie The Post on Wednesday night in a striking tuxedo suit in London.

The Oscar-winning actress put her best fashion foot forward for the cinematic event in her double-breasted blazer which featured silk peak lapels and hinted at her satin camisole underneath.

She means business: Meryl Streep, 68, proved she meaned business on the red carpet for the European premiere of her new movie The Post on Wednesday night in a striking tuxedo suit in London

Her eye-catching piece boasted a daring waterfall frill down one-side which fell to her knee and added a chic style flair to ensemble.

She teamed the statement tailored piece with a pair of cropped matching suit trousers which drew attention to her tight covered foot and velvet-covered heel.

Working her blonde-hued coif off her face into a chignon, the age-defying star let her glittering drop-earrings take front and centre while sporting a pair of cat-eyed silver-framed glasses.

Adding an extra touch of sparkle to her look, Meryl held onto her red leather quilted clutch with silver crystal detailing in her manicured hand as she posed on the carpet.

Based on a true story, the flick follows The Washington Post’s former publisher Kay Graham – played by Streep – who became the first female publisher of the American newspaper, while Tom Hanks plays editor Ben Bradlee in the historical drama.

The journalistic drama is set in the years following the Vietnam War – which was released in the US on December 22 – and centres around The Washington Post’s race to secure and publish the classified Pentagon Papers in 1971, which exposed a government cover-up spanning decades.

The 7,000 pages revealed the United States’ involvement in the Vietnam war from 1945 to 1967.

The existence of the papers was originally discovered by The New York Times when they published excerpts in June 1971 under the headline Vietnam Archive: Pentagon Study Traces Three Decades Of US Involvement.

The movie chronicles Ben as he races to find the leaked Pentagon papers after the Times first published them.

The film also delves into sexism with Meryl’s character being the first female publisher of a major US newspaper.

Spielberg directed and co-produced the film. The script was written by Liz Hannah and Amy Pascal served as co-producer.

In addition to Meryl and Tom, The Post also stars Sarah Paulson, Alison Brie, Matthew Rhys, Tracy Letts and Bob Odenkirk.

While the Meryl and Tom have never appeared on screen together, the duo have actually worked together before.

Hanks was a producer on the 2006 animated film The Ant Bully – which Meryl provided a voice for – and they also both appeared as themselves in the 2015 documentary about writer/filmmaker Nora Ephron, Everything Is Copy. Tom was also a producer on Meryl’s 2008 smash Mamma Mia.

Back on the red carpet in London, Meryle was one of a number of famous faces in the film spotted at the premiere, including Spielberg, Tom Hanks and his actress Rita Wilson.

The highly-awaited flick however noticeably earned zero nominations when the contenders for the Screen Actor Guild Awards were announced last week.

And the journalistic drama was even snubbed by BAFTA on Monday when it didn’t lad a single honour after it earned six Golden Globe nominations and is a likely candidate for the 2018 Oscars.
