Brad Mondo, who is the CEO of New York-based salon XMondo, took to his YouTube channel in March to dispel some of the half truths that have been passed down for generations
Firstly, Brad believes to a certain extent cutting off split ends can help your hair grow faster.
When a strand splits at the end of the follicle it will continue splitting up the hair, creating weaker and more easily tangled knots as the days pass.
He recommends chopping off the ends before they get to this stage because it will ultimately make for fuller, thicker and healthier looking locks.
The ‘blunt’ look of a freshly chopped head of hair often looks longer than hair with straggly end pieces.
For those who believe hair brushes are ‘bad’ Brad has some good news.
Brushing your hair everyday can actually help it grow faster because you’re pushing the natural oils from your scalp down the length of your strands, moisturising them.
It also stimulates the blood vessels in your scalp which promotes hair growth.
The only thing you need to be mindful of is your brushing technique when your hair is wet because it’s more likely to snap off if there are knots.
So what’s his take on treatments?

‘I think it’s important to remember that your hair is dead as soon as the follicle leaves the scalp. So if it’s damaged by straighteners or products you can’t “heal” it with leave-in treatments,’ he said.
‘Those treatments will give it the appearance of shine immediately after but won’t be long-lasting.’
In a latter part of the video Brad explained that the old wives tale about lemon juice lightening your hair is true because its acidity reacts to the sun’s heat.
However, it is more likely going to turn your hair orange over a golden tone so it’s best to trust the professionals with your highlights.
He went on to say that rinsing your hair with cold water doesn’t make it any shinier, grey hair is down to genetics rather than stress and colour doesn’t ‘attach’ better to hair if its dirtier.
