The Grinch receives a VERY dark makeover as a murderous monster in the upcoming horror parody feature The Mean One

The Grinch has become well-known as a Christmastime favorite character for generations of children.

However, the beloved creation of Dr. Seuss will be getting a bloody makeover in the upcoming horror parody feature The Mean One.

The news about the project was reported on Friday by Deadline, and it was revealed that XYZ Films had picked up the movie for distribution.

Taking a dark turn: The Grinch will be getting a bloody makeover in the upcoming slasher parody feature The Mean One

According to the media outlet, The Mean One will be centered on the Santa suit-wearing creature of the same name, who lives on a mountaintop high above Frazier Park and spends his time despising the holiday season.

Cindy You-Know-Who, whose parents became the character’s victims twenty Christmases ago, makes her return to the village to seek revenge.

A promotional image was also released, which showed the movie’s main character tormenting his new target.

The Mean One will be played by David Howard Thornton, with Krystle Martin, Chase Mullins and John Bigham appearing in supporting roles.

XYZ Films’ Manager of Acquisitions and Development, Alex Williams, issued a statement to Deadline to express his excitement about the project.

He stated: ‘As a passionate fan of seasonal horror, The Mean One is exactly the kind of film that lands on my personal “nice list.”‘

Williams added that ‘XYZ Films is so proud to be bringing this soon-to-be iconic Christmas slasher to audiences this holiday season.’

The Mean One is currently scheduled to be released for free online on December 15.

The Grinch is not the only childhood-favorite character who will be receiving a horror-filled makeover, as Winnie The Pooh and Piglet will be portrayed as a pair of cannibals in Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey.

Development on the upcoming horror project was announced earlier this year.

Although Disney had held the rights to the characters since 1966, Winnie-The-Pooh fell into the public domain this past January, and the filmmakers went to great lengths to differentiate their take on the children’s tale from the media giant’s.

The movie will follow the formerly lovable bear and pig, who were previously supplied with food by Christopher Robin.

However, after their longtime friend leaves for college, the pair turn to murder and cannibalism to satisfy their stomachs.

The film’s director, Rhys Waterfield, spoke to Variety and expressed that the new version of the bear would set itself apart from the animated versions of the beloved character.

‘No one is going to mistake this [for Disney]. When you see the cover for this and you see the trailers and the stills and all that, there’s no way anyone is going to think this is a child’s version of it,’ he said.
