Tully Smyth gets eggs frozen in brand collaboration with fertility clinic

Big Brother Australia star Tully Smyth has sparked online backlash for participating in a sponsored brand deal with a Melbourne fertility clinic.

The influencer, 35, announced to her Instagram followers on Tuesday that she’d decided to freeze her eggs and had ‘partnered up’ with Monash IVF to make it happen.

Egg freezing is a method of collecting and freezing a woman’s unfertilised eggs, so that they can be used to conceive at a later date.

‘I did some research and I’ve heard so many glowing recommendations, so many beautiful stories about people’s experiences with the Monash IVF team,’ Tully enthused in a lengthy video.

Emotional music swelled in the background as Tully explained how she’d finally ‘pulled the trigger’ on egg freezing after ‘marinating on the decision’ for years.

‘So I reached out and thankfully they’ve agreed, and they’re very keen to work with me on my egg freezing journey,’ she explained.

Tully, who is in a long-distance relationship with sports presenter Daniel Parisi, later admitted she’d put off the decision to freeze her eggs because she felt ashamed of failing to ‘reach the milestone’ of having kids.

She also promised to document every step of her journey in the hopes of encouraging others to take control of their fertility.

What is egg freezing?

Egg freezing is a method of collecting and freezing a woman’s unfertilised eggs, so that they can be used to conceive at a later date.

As a woman gets older the quality of her eggs decreases, making it harder for her to conceive naturally.

However, if she has frozen eggs in storage woman may be able to conceive at a time when she wouldn’t normally be as fertile.

When the woman wants to conceive, the eggs can be thawed and fertilised using sperm in a lab, before the embryo is implanted back into the woman.

According to Monash IVF’s website, egg freezing can cost between $AUD 7,000 and $10,000 per egg retrieval, with additional costs for storage and fertility treatments.

Tully did not reveal whether she was gifted the procedure for free as part of the brand promotion, or whether she was simply paid for her involvement.

Monash IVF declined to provide details when contacted by Daily Mail Australia.

‘Due to patient confidentiality, we are unable to discuss the details of Tully’s treatment with us, this includes costs and payment of services,’ Fiona Allen, Chief Marketing Officer at Monash IVF, said.

Instagram ‘snark’ account Influencer Updates AU has since re-shared the clip, sparking an onslaught of angry comments from fans speculating Tully had received her egg freezing procedure for free.

According to the Monash IVF website, a single egg retrieval can cost between $AUD 7,000 and $10,000m, along with additional costs for storage and fertility treatments.

Some users claimed free egg freezing should be given to women who desperately need it, rather than a seemingly privileged influencer.

‘This doesn’t sit right with me. I know couples who desperately need fertility treatment but can’t afford it,’ one user wrote

‘This is really sad! I feel for the families who desperately need fertility treatment but cannot afford it. Seeing this would be a slap in the face,’ a second fan commented.

‘If only the likely free service was given to a woman who can’t actually afford it,’ another added.

However, others spoke out in defence of Tully by arguing the blonde may not have been able to afford it either.

‘No issues at all with Tully taking them up on this, it’s always been important to her, and we also don’t know her financial situation and whether she could afford it or not,’ someone argued.

Another user also wrote in defence of Tully: ‘If someone offered me free IVF i would take it in a heartbeat.’

‘I also think the whole process needs to be spoken about on a more public platform and I think Tully is so relatable and will do a great job spreading the word,’ they added.

Meanwhile, some users said the idea of providing medial treatments in exchange for publicity made them ‘uncomfortable’, which others called for ‘stricter regulations’ on the kinds of products that Influencers can promote.

‘There needs to be more regulation on medical partnerships and influencers. A slap in the face to those struggling for years to start a family and fork out thousands on treatment,’ one wrote.

Tully isn’t the first influencer to partner with a fertility clinic as part of a brand deal.

In 2021 Bachelor star Brittany Hockley, 35, also froze her eggs as part of a paid collaboration with Sydney fertility clinic Genea.
