Swans coach John Longmire has a cheeky dig at Katy Perry just before her AFL grand final performance

  • John Longmire isn’t known for having a dry sense of humour
  • Swans coach was asked his thoughts on pop star Katy Perry
  • His response stunned Lions coach Chris Fagan and reporters

Swans coach John Longmire displayed his sense of humour on Friday, having a cheeky dig at pop superstar Katy Perry ahead of her AFL grand final performance at the MCG in front of 100,000 plus fans.

Longmire, 53, left rival Chris Fagan and a scrum of journalists in stitches on Friday when asked if he would watch Perry entertain the capacity crowd.

‘I’ve got it [Perry’s music] on my playlist – one of the many genres that I’m into,’ he said at the grand final parade.

‘Firework’, I could rattle them off, I was listening to them on the way here.

‘But it would be fair to say, hopefully we [Swans] don’t listen to it too much whenever it’s on.

‘That’s no disrespect to Katy – she’s a wonderful singer.’

It comes as Perry – who is reportedly being paid a whopping $5 million by the AFL -will be supported by the likes of Cody Simpson, Christine Anu and Mike Brady – the singer of AFL anthem’s Up There Cazaly and One Day in September.

Earlier this week, Channel Nine reporter Tom Morris revealed AFL big wigs told the hitmaker they want her to perform her global smash hits, such as Firework, Roar and I Kissed A Girl.

Appearing on SEN Breakfast, the footy journalist claimed that Perry’s team had pushed back against an AFL request that the Teenage Dream hitmaker perform just one new song.

‘She’s playing about five songs and the AFL was very keen for her to play five classic tunes, she wanted to play two new ones,’ he said.

Morris added both camps reached a compromise with Perry reportedly agreeing to belt out just one new track.

‘In the end they met halfway and she’s playing one new song and four classics,’ he said.

Co-host Kane Cornes, who admitted he was a Perry fan, added the AFL should have a say in the planning of the blockbuster show.

‘The AFL are saying: ‘We only want your hits. We only want your bangers. We want Roar, Teenage Dream, Firework.’ They want all the songs we know and love,’ he said.

‘You know when you go to a concert and maybe they’re old and all you want is their good stuff. You want their greatest hits.’

First bounce between the Sydney Swans and Brisbane Lions in the AFL grand final at the MCG is from 2.30pm AEDT on Saturday.
