The build-up to England’s Nations League fixtures against Greece and the Republic of Ireland this week has been dominated by several stars dropping out of Lee Carsley’s squad.
In fact, nine players – including Phil Foden, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Cole Palmer – have done so, with Three Lions captain Harry Kane subsequently hitting out at the number of withdrawals.
Speaking to ITV Sport on Wednesday, he said: ‘I think England comes before anything. England comes before club. It’s a shame this week obviously. I think it’s a tough period of the season, maybe that’s been taken advantage of a little bit. I don’t really like it if I’m totally honest.’
And, in the latest episode of It’s All Kicking Off!, co-hosts Chris Sutton and Ian Ladyman discussed the issue – which has set tongues wagging – and explained whether or not they agreed with Kane’s comments.
They also touched on where the blame lies given England now have a somewhat threadbare squad ahead of two games they need to win if they are to finish top of their Nations League group.
