Nine arrested after violent brawl erupted on a quiet Melbourne street and leaves one man fighting for life

A young man is fighting for life after being stabbed during a violent brawl erupted early on Saturday morning, as police make nine arrests. 

Emergency services were called to Mosfield Drive in Hoppers Crossing, in Melbourne’s southwest, about 3.40am and found a 23-year-old man with life threatening injuries.

He was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.

The nine men will be questioned by detectives and no charges have been laid. 

Police are also investigating whether a second man who presented at a Werribee hospital with suspected stab wounds is linked to the Hoppers Crossing incident.

A 16-year old boy arrived in a black Mazda CX9 at about 4am and also had serious stab injuries. A police spokesman said it was unclear where the second stabbing had occurred.

On Saturday detectives interviewed residents in the quiet Hoppers Crossing street and officers were seen combing the area around Fraser Street Reserve and a property on Spring Street,

Residents said were woken by a commotion at about 3.30am. 

‘I heard cries for help a couple of times and then I heard swearing,’ neighbour George told The Herald Sun.

‘I looked out my window and there were three guys running.’

‘I was a bit upset by what was going on, it’s a quiet street here. I knew something was wrong and that’s when I called the police.’

Police said they don’t believe either incident was a random attack. 

‘Investigations are ongoing into the circumstances of both incidents, which police believe are targeted at this stage,’ a Victoria Police spokesperson said.

‘Detectives are working to establish whether the two incidents are linked.’

The spokesman asked anyone who witnessed the incidents or had footage or information to contact Crime Stoppers.
