The University of Indiana moving its Winter Commencement up several hours to 9 a.m. and Noon to accommodate those wanting to watch the Hoosiers in the College Football Playoff game has infuriated some students.
The Hoosiers are 11-1 and are the No 10 seed in the first 12-team CFP, with the most important game in the school’s gridiron history on December 20 against in-state foe Notre Dame.
It is an 8 p.m. kickoff in South Bend, a 3-hour drive from Bloomington. With all graduation honors expected to wrap by 3 p.m., that gives the faithful Hoosiers fans time to take off their cap and gown and go north on Route 31.
Making history on the football field made some hoping to do both next Friday happy, while making some, who had already made plans for the day, furious with the decision to move what they feel should be the more important experience.
‘What an embarrassing excuse of a school,’ one Instagram user said. ‘Thank you for your consideration of hardworking graduates whose families now can’t attend their graduation because you care more about football than your students. So disappointed I’m getting my degree from here.’
‘This is horrible and very inconsiderate decision! What about the people who’s families can’t accommodate this change?’

‘I’ve seen several people complain about hypothetical families being unable to go, but not state it’s affecting them, which makes me believe you’re just complaining for selfish reasons and are trying to use those “families” as a shield for you. I’m sorry you’re going to have to alter your breakfast/lunch plans, but try to be a little less sanctimonious.’
Indiana has never been this good at football, ever. The program’s record for wins in a season was nine before 2024, with the team tying that feat this season after nine games.
The Hoosiers football program has quickly become one of America’s best under first-year head coach Curt Cignetti.
Before this year, Indiana has been viewed athletically as a men’s basketball school, as the former home of Bobby Knight and the hallowed Assembly Hall.
Attendance at commencement ceremonies is not mandatory to graduate, with some opting to solely be mailed their diplomas weeks later instead of walking across a stage to receive it.
