Two donkeys painted like zebras for a safari-themed wedding reception at a Spanish beach town have outraged animal rights activists.

They were filmed plodding around outside a bar by a concerned local in El Palmar, a town in Cadiz, who reported it to animal rights campaigners on Saturday.

He said it was ‘shameful’ and had recorded it so that justice could be done.

Angel Tomás Herrera Peláez wrote on Facebook alongside the video: ‘The donkeys, in danger of extinction, used for tourist exploitation.’

The complainant told the Mother Earth Platform and the organisation brought the case to the attention of local officials and the civil guard.

The OCA (Agricultural and Commercial Office) of Cadiz said they had launched an investigation on Monday. 

Local media report that the bar – known as a ‘chiringuito’ – is usually only opened for private events like weddings and communions.

It has reportedly received complaints in the past and gained notoriety for its parties.
