A Melbourne driver has been charged after he allegedly crashed his car into a tree under the influence of alcohol and then tried to walk away, leaving a six-year-old boy alone in the car. 

The 40-year-old driver from St Albans had just driven from a property in McKechnie Street when he lost control of the car about 3.50pm on Sunday.

The man allegedly started to walk away when officers arrived at the scene, leaving the child alone in the rear of the car. 

A Melbourne driver has been charged after he allegedly crashed his car into a tree under the influence of alcohol and then tried to walk away, leaving a six-year-old boy alone in the car.

‘He was stopped by police, the boy’s mother was called and attended while the driver was taken to Sunshine Police Station for an evidentiary breath test,’ police said.

‘He returned an alleged reading of .233 per cent.’

His licence has been suspended.

Police said the driver is likely to be prosecuted for a string of driving offences as well as conduct endangering life.

‘He has a lot of explaining to do.’
