Ruby Rose unexpectedly vanished from social media on the eve of her 37th birthday, after sharing a worrying post about how it is ‘nothing to celebrate’.
The Australian actress uploaded an Instagram Story on Sunday afternoon announcing she was logging out of her accounts until Tuesday when she did reappear.
And after the scary incident MailOnline is taking a look back at her difficult past and traumatic childhood.
The star suffered troubled younger years and dark times that included sexual abuse as a youngster, attempting suicide at age 12 and being bullied for her sexuality.
Raised single-handedly by her mother Katia Langenheim, an artist who walked out on Ruby’s father when her daughter was just two, Ruby has previously said she endured a turbulent childhood.

Her mother was 23 when she left taking her little girl and the TV with her.
They spent some months living in a shack Katia bought on the beachside haven of Kilcunda outside Melbourne, close to the home of Ruby’s famous godfather, erstwhile boxing legend Lionel Rose.
Ruby attended Melbourne’s University High School, in Parkville, before going on to Footscray City College, and has spoken of her famous godfather whom she says she was close to.
A year after he died in 2011, however, his widow hit out at the actress, whose birth name is Ruby Rose Lagenheim, accusing her of cashing in on his reputation.
‘I don’t want to be nasty about her – I don’t even know the girl,’ his widow Jenny told the Herald Sun.
‘Her father was a very special mate of Lionel’s, but after he split up with her mum we never saw her.’
Ruby refused to comment at the time, tweeting only: ‘Unfortunately like many I have a family where not everyone gets along.’
Indeed, Ruby has admitted withdrawing into herself for some time after she came out as lesbian, age 12, losing years to anxiety and angst.

She has recalled feeling marginalized, something of a ‘misfit’, and the ensuing five years saw her verbally taunted by schoolmates because of her sexuality.
She has spoken about sexual abuse she suffered as a child and has been searingly open about suicidal thoughts that have plagued her from the age of 12 [when she came out as gay].
‘I was getting suicidal thoughts when I shouldn’t have even known what suicide was at that age,’ she told the Daily Telegraph.
‘My past involved incestuous sexual abuse – and a turbulent home life which was not always safe.’
The situation culminated when her high school contemporaries [five girls and one boy] smashed metal chairs into the back of her head resulting in her being hospitalised when she was 16, she says.
‘They didn’t like the fact I was different. I don’t think they had hatred for me, per se; I think it was more that I stuck out like a sore thumb,’ she told the Edit in her recent interview.
Ruby, who is bipolar, believes she has suffered with depression for as long as she can remember.
On 31 March 2013, she tweeted fans telling them she felt she could no longer fight her demons alone and needed to check into rehab.
‘It is with great sadness that despite everything I have tried in the short time I was given I am still losing my battle with depression … these things need attention sometimes,’ she tweeted frankly, throwing the seriousness of her condition to the public domain.
More recently she told Who Magazine: ‘I have struggled with depression for years. I’ve gone from managing it to not managing it and it not being able to be managed.’
She went on: ‘You have to think about your diets, it’s why I don’t drink, I take medication for a few years, it stops working, and you have to find new medication.
‘I have bipolar and it’s not going anywhere.’
On Tuesday Ruby resurfaced less than 24 hours after vowing to take a break from social media on her birthday – an event she said was ‘nothing to celebrate’.
The actress and DJ posted a video on Instagram of herself visiting a dog shelter in Australia as she encouraged her followers to adopt animals in need.
Sitting cross-legged on the floor with a dog in her lap, the Resident Evil: The Final Chapter star urged her fans to consider adopting if they ‘have the ability or time’.
Ruby, who wore a black T-shirt and baggy ripped jeans, also donated a box of treats to the Lost Dogs’ Home shelter.
It came just hours after she sparked concerns for her welfare with an alarming post saying she would not be celebrating her 37th birthday this year.

She explained in her cryptic post, which she deleted just minutes later, that she does not celebrate her birthday, but did not disclose why.
‘Logging off until the 21st. If you have followed me for long enough you know I don’t acknowledge tomorrow,’ she wrote.
‘I don’t celebrate that day… That day has never been a celebration. Some have tried but it was never a celebration at the time, and nor is it now.’
‘So please leave it for me this year,’ she concluded.
It was unclear why the Orange Is the New Black star no longer celebrates her birthday, although she has thrown parties with friends and family in the past.
In 2019, Ruby held early birthday celebrations with a group of friends, including her former Batwoman co-star Rachel Skarsten and You actress Elizabeth Lail.
The group danced around Ruby’s kitchen, eating cake and junk food, and singing along to retro pop songs.
In what seemed to be a wholesome evening, the women donned matching ‘Happy Birthday Ruby’ shirts and choreographed their own dance routines.
‘My friends are the best,’ she declared at the time.

In 2017, the former MTV Australia presenter was serenaded on stage by her then-girlfriend Jessica Origliasso in a surprise birthday tribute.
She was presented with roses at the live music venue Eddie’s Attic in Atlanta before the crowd sang Happy Birthday.
Ruby does not appear to have celebrated her birthday since 2020.
The day after her birthday in 2021, her replacement on the CW show Batwoman was announced.
British actress Wallis Day took over the role of Ruby’s former character Kate Kane.
