A look at The Celebrity Old Dads’ Club

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Robert De Niro has become a father again at the ripe age of 79. 

The iconic actor shocked the world when he casually announced he had ‘just had a baby’ in an interview – after his long-term girlfriend Tiffany Chen, who is believed to be 45 – was seen with a baby bump in March.

And despite sending shockwaves around the world with the announcement, older fathers are certainly not a rarity in Hollywood or in the showbiz stratosphere, with ages ranging as high as 89 in The Old Dads’ Club. 

So which stars have opted to clean nappies, wipe up drool and sing lullabies as quinquagenarians, sexagenarians, septuagenarians and octogenarians.

BERNIE ECCLESTONE – 89

Bernie, now 92, became a father of four at 89, when he welcomed a son named Ace with his wife Fabiana Flosi, then 44, on 1 July 2020.

Ace is the former Formula One boss’ first son, and first child with Fabiana. He is also dad to daughters Deborah, 68, Tamara, 38, and Petra, 34, from previous marriages.

CHARLIE CHAPLIN – 73 

The iconic screen star, who passed away on Christmas Day 1977, was a pioneer of the old fathers of Hollywood after he welcomed his youngest son in 1962. 

Charlie was 73 when Christopher Chaplin was born at Clinique de Mont Choisi in Lausanne, Switzerland. He shared the son with his fourth wife Oona O’Neill, with whom he had eight children.

MICK JAGGER – 73 

The Rolling Stones frontman, now 79, became a dad for the eighth time when he and ballerina-girlfriend Melanie Hamrick welcomed a son in December 2016.

He was 73 when Devereaux was born. 

He is also father to Karis, 52, Jade, 51, Elizabeth, 39, James, 37, Georgia, 31, Gabriel, 25, and Lucas, 23. 

BILLY JOEL – 71 

Billy, now 74, was a father of one to singer-songwriter Alexa Ray Joel, now 37, with ex Christie Brinkley, when he welcomed daughter Della Rose in 2015 with wife Alexa.

Then in October 2017, when he welcomed daughter Remy Anne.

RONNIE WOOD – 68

Despite already being a grandfather to 10 and father of five when he was 68, Ronnie, now 75, welcomed twin girls with his wife Sally in May 2016.

STEVE MARTIN – 67 

At 67, Steve, now 77, welcomed a daughter in 2012 with his wife Anne Stringfield. 

Speaking on fatherhood in 2017, he said: ‘I think if I’d had a child earlier, I would have been a lousy father because I would have misplaced my attention on my career.’

GARY BUSEY – 65 

Gary’s ventures into fatherhood are far-reaching across the time scale. 

The actor, now 78, welcomed son Luke with partner Steffanie Samoson in 2010 aged 65 – having previously had his eldest son William in 1971 and a daughter, Alectra, in 1995. 

WARREN BEATTY – 63 

Warren, now 86, became a father again at 63 when his superstar wife Annette Bening, who he wed in 1992, gave birth in 2000. 

The couple are parents to Stephen, 31, Benjamin, 28, Isabel, 26, and Ella, 23. 

CLINT EASTWOOD – 63 

Clint, now 92, was a father to six when he met his now ex-wife Dina with whom he welcomed their daughter Morgan in 1996, when he was 65.   

MEL GIBSON – 61 

Mel, now 67, was with his wife Robyn for nearly 30 years while sharing seven children – before their 2009 split. 

Months after the split, Mel announced  he and his model girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva were expecting a baby.

Baby daughter Lucia was born in October 2009, only five months before the couple’s relationship ended.

In 2015, he the moved on with screenwriter Rosalind Ross and in January 2017 they welcomed Gibson’s ninth child, a son named Lars, when he was 61.

AL PACINO – 61

Al, now 86, became a father later on in life when he welcomed his first daughter Julie in 1989, and his twins Olivia and Anton in 2001 with partner Beverly. 

PAUL MCCARTNEY – 61 

Paul, now 80, shared four children with his late wife Linda before meeting Heather Mills, who he married in 2002. 

A year later – aged 61 – he became father to daughter Beatrice and later split acrimoniously with Heather.

Murphy, now 62, was 59 when he and his Australian model girlfriend Paige Butcher, welcomed their second child – which was his 10th child. 

The actor is dad to nine other children with five women, including five kids with his ex-wife Nicole Murphy.

MICHAEL DOUGLAS – 59 

Michael, now 78, became a dad again at 59 when he welcomed daughter Carys in 2003 with wife Catherine Zeta-Jones. 

He was already dad to Cameron before he met Catherine in 1998 and they later had Dylan in 2000 followed by Carys.  

Speaking about fatherhood later in life, Michael said: ‘I never anticipated starting a family and the joy of raising kids at my age.’ 

BRUCE WILLIS – 55

Bruce, now 68, who has three daughters from his marriage to Demi Moore, was 57 when he and wife Emma Heming had daughter Mabel in 2012. 

Two years later, the couple had daughter Evelyn in 2014.
