A tribute to the Queen on her birthday: Kate Middleton borrowed Her Majesty’s pearl drop earrings as she joined Prince William at an air cadet centre

The Duchess of Cambridge honoured the Queen on her birthday yesterday by borrowing her pearl earrings for a visit to an air cadet centre. 

Kate Middleton, 39, borrowed the silver jubilee diamond and pearl earrings from the monarch, 93, who first wore them to celebrate her silver jubilee in 1977. 

The mother-of-three wore the glitzy earrings along with a black D&G coat with gold button detailing as she joined husband Prince William on a tour of the 282 East Ham Squadron Air Training Corps.

The visit, which took place on the Queen’s 95th birthday, was carried out in honour of the Duke of Edinburgh, who was Honorary Air Commodore-in-Chief of the squadron for 63 years before Kate took over as Commandant-in-Chief in 2015.

Kate has worn the monarch’s diamond and pearl drop earrings on a number of occasions, previously on her first solo engagement to the Netherlands in 2016. 

The Queen is currently observing a two-week mourning period and Kate reflected the sombre mood with her black ensemble. 

She previously wore the D&G military-inspired coat, which falls to just below the knees, on Remembrance Sunday in 2017. At the time she was pregnant with Prince Louis.

During the visit  Kate was guided through a flight on the Grob Tutor, which is used by the RAF for elementary training,

The couple were also treated to a moving three cheers for the Duke of Edinburgh during the visit.

Established in 1941, the Air Cadets is a UK-wide cadet force with more than 32,000 members aged between 12-19 years old. 

During the visit to 282 Squadron, The Duke and Duchess met cadets taking part in field craft exercises and leadership tasks, before speaking to a number of the young people who are preparing for their Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

Each year, the Air Cadets receives approximately 3,000 Duke of Edinburgh Awards across the scheme’s Bronze, Silver and Gold levels, amounting to over 193,000 Awards since the programme began in 1956.

The Duke and Duchess also spoke with a group of serving RAF officers who were all previously cadets and heard more about how the scheme help them to gain important life and social skills which they have taken forward into their careers. 

It comes just three days after the Duke and Duchess joined family including Prince Harry at the Duke of Edinburgh’s intimate funeral at St George’s Chapel, Windsor.
