A young mother is seething with anger after she found used needles in a children’s playground while enjoying a day with her 18-month-old son.

Kiera Thorpe was at Grahame Stewart Park in Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast with her husband and son when they found empty packets of needles on Sunday morning.

The shocked family soon discovered two used syringes by the children’s play equipment in the park.

‘It was our first time at the park and had been playing for at least 15 minutes before my husband started picking up idle rubbish,’ Ms Thorpe told Daily Mail Australia.

‘He then picked up two open syringe packets which triggered a thought that there is probably syringes in the park so we had a look and found two used syringes by the train we had been playing on moments earlier.’

Ms Thorpe said they disposed the needles and alerted nearby parents.

She later posted a warning to Sunny Coast Community Board.

‘Two used syringes found at Grahame Stewart Park in Currimundi left in the small children’s train section just in the sand,’ she wrote.

‘We found the empty packets first but so glad we found the needles before our son did. Please please check your surroundings.’

Ms Thorpe said this is not the first time syringes have been found in the exact same spot.

‘Not that I was aware of before going there this morning but after sharing my experience on the community page apparently this has definitely happened before in the same spot,’ she said.

She said they have alerted a local councillor and are expecting to hear from him soon.

‘My intent is not to put any body on blast but just to make sure parents are keeping their eyes open for the unexpected.’
