Abandoned East Village cheese shop leaves behind stench

An abandoned cheese shop is stinking up a block in NYC’s East Village after being abandoned for more than two weeks.

East Village Cheese, located at 80 East Seventh Street in Manhattan, New York, was last seen open on December 7 and shut down without any notice to customers.

The closed shop has had gates locked ever since and the store’s power was cut off, leaving behind a dominant stench of rotting cheese that is leaving nearby businesses extremely annoyed.

‘The smell of cheese is seeping into my hat shop, and I am looking for ideas for how to get the place emptied before it rots,’ said Julia Knox, owner of the next door East Village Hats, to the EV Grieve.

‘My biggest concern is that the smell is going to be unbearable pretty soon, and a potential rat problem.’

Aware of the potent odor, the landlord has yet to move on the store as there are legal concerns surrounding entering the premises.

Inside the gated store, cheese and other assorted bake goods sit untouched and are slowly getting more and more moldy.

Between slits of papers advertising different cheeses, visitors can even see a coffee pot left on the burner with remnants of the drink left behind.

On the door, business hours are still advertised but there is a sign that says ‘Sorry We’re Closed’.

East Village Cheese moved to the area from Third Avenue back in September 2015 but was said to have been struggling.

The cash-only shop was infamously known for its early close time that prevented patrons from stopping by after work hours.

‘These guys never really got on their feet after the move,’ Knox added.

A 2011 article from The Local East Village list Lobsang Tsultrim and Thupten Tenphel as owners of the store.
