Abbie Chatfield refuses to accept Brittany Hockley’s apology over slut-shaming row

Brittany Hockley didn’t show up for work at KIIS FM on Wednesday as she faces growing backlash after rival radio host Abbie Chatfield publicly accused her of ‘slut-shaming’.

The 35-year-old went to ground as her feud with Abbie escalated overnight, taking the day off her Summer KIIS breakfast show with Mitch Churi and Phil Burton, and instead addressing the controversy in a statement on Instagram.

Meanwhile, the backlash shows no sign of slowing down after Abbie, 27, brutally rejected Brittany’s apology in a series of Instagram posts.

Brittany had apologised for her remarks during her November interview with rapper Yung Gravy – in which she joked about Abbie’s dating life – but the Masked Singer judge said it was insufficient and only demonstrated her ‘internalised misogyny’.

She rejected the excuse that mistakes are made on live radio and that she had tried to limit her contributions during the interview as soon as Abbie was mentioned.

The former Bachelor star also scolded Brittany for not standing up to her co-host Kyle Sandilands when he asked Gravy about his romantic history.

‘Live radio is hard, but if I say something off on air, I message the person immediately. But you didn’t, showing you didn’t feel shameful after doing this. You only realised the very clear issue after I called you out,’ she wrote.

‘Also, you didn’t say as little as possible. You added commentary. You weren’t silent. You asked if we had sexted after Kyle asked if I had sent nudes. You brought me up two more times in total [during the Yung Gravy interview].

‘Don’t blame the segment and live radio. Again, if you can’t hold you own in that environment, maybe it isn’t for you.’

Abbie went on to say she ‘wasn’t shocked’ by Brittany’s remarks in light of their time together on the dating show Bachelor in Paradise in 2020.

Meanwhile, Yung Gravy himself has spoken out, telling The Brag he ‘didn’t like’ how Brittany and Kyle reacted when the conversation turned to his friendship with Abbie.

‘I remember that interview… I remember them saying that. I was like, “This is kinda wack,’ he said.

‘Hopefully they’re close friends ’cause I, I didn’t really like how [Kyle] reacted to it.’

The feud exploded on Tuesday when Abbie called out Brittany for joking about her love life while interviewing Gravy live on KIIS FM last month.

At the time, she was filling in for Jackie ‘O’ Henderson on The Kyle and Jackie O Show alongside Kyle Sandilands.

While Kyle was the one leading the conversation, Abbie said Brittany was complicit in his ‘misogyny’ by refusing to speak up.

Britt posted a statement on Instagram on Wednesday in which she apologised for her involvement in the ‘misogynistic’ jokes, and insisted she had always been an advocate for female empowerment.

‘I want to apologise for the undercurrent misogynistic tones that the interview had,’ she began.

‘The nature of live radio is unpredictable and often unplanned, which was the case with the direction that this conversation took. Live on radio I found myself in a position where Abbie and I were pitted against each other.’

Brittany said she had never intended to offend Abbie and blamed the gaffe on the nature of live radio.

‘This was not planned, and this was not something I felt comfortable with and I thought by saying as little as possible in the interview it would not add any fire to the situation. I see with hindsight that this was naïve and contradictory to what I stand for,’ she said.

‘As a woman who has championed female empowerment, relationship equality and sexual freedom over the past four years, I am deeply apologetic that this happened,’ she wrote.

Brittany also addressed rumours she had ignored an Instagram message from Abbie nine days ago in which she asked her privately about the Yung Gravy segment.

‘I was never notified that Abbie had reached out to me as I had muted notifications [on Instagram], given the overwhelming volume [of messages] I receive each day. I have since reached out,’ she wrote.

Brittany concluded by again expressing her regret over what happened, writing: ‘I acknowledge that the standard you walk by is the standard you accept.

‘I will learn from this and do better in the future. I am sorry.’

Although the interview happened a month ago, an enraged Abbie reacted to it on Tuesday’s episode of her podcast It’s A Lot, accusing the pair of spreading ‘misogynistic rhetoric’ about her.

‘The issue that I think people like Kyle and Brittany have with me is that I’m able to speak about sexuality in a way that isn’t shameful, and they think that that must equate to f**king around, having sex every single day,’ she said.

‘When actually, it’s just that I don’t have the shame that they have, and therefore they’re projecting it onto me,’ she added.

‘Say what you want about me, but do not perpetuate slut-shaming bulls**t on the biggest radio show in the country.’

She also shared a lengthy post about the incident on Instagram, saying she was ‘incredibly disappointed to hear Kyle and Brittany slut-shame me’.

Abbie’s loyal followers agreed with her, with many taking to the comments section to blast Kyle and Brittany for being so ‘problematic’.

‘I will never understand how Kyle gets any radio time,’ wrote one.

‘I didn’t expect this from Brittany. I know a lot of her podcast listeners were really disappointed when she took the position with Kyle, myself included,’ another added. ‘But I thought she deserved the benefit of the doubt. Clearly she didn’t.’

‘Brittany. The next “pick-me girl” just like Jackie O,’ a third said.

Many of Abbie’s fans then moved off her page and went directly to Brittany’s Instagram account to troll the Life Uncut host.

‘I have a question, Britt: do you support women and women’s rights?’ asked one.

‘Do better, girl. Seriously, do better. Slut-shaming isn’t right and you know it. Get up, stand up, for women!’ added another.

Daily Mail Australia contacted KIIS FM for comment at the time.

Brittany currently co-hosts Australia’s most popular female-led podcast, Life Uncut, with her best friend Laura Byrne.

The podcast has been spun off into its own radio show on KIIS FM, and Brittany has also been filling in for Jackie ‘O’ Henderson on The Kyle and Jackie O Show since last month.

Abbie, a successful podcaster and radio personality in her own right, is currently signed to rival network LiSTNR, which is owned by Southern Cross Austereo.

Both Brittany and Abbie shot to fame as runners-up on The Bachelor.

Brittany was ditched by Nick Cummins on season six in 2018, while Abbie was passed over by Matt Agnew for Chelsie McLeod the following year.

Meanwhile, Married At First Sight star Domenica Calarco has since weighed in on the controversy surrounding Brittany.

The fiery makeup artist backed Abbie and singled out Brittany for not standing up to Kyle, claiming it ‘triggered’ her own trauma from being slut-shamed on MAFS.

She also claimed she was originally asked to fill in for Jackie for a day back in August, before begging KIIS FM to bring her on the show so she could ‘challenge’ Kyle because Brittany wouldn’t.

‘I understand that Brittany probably wants to put her best foot forward, not f**k anyone over, impress people, be a little good girl, don’t do anything to piss anyone off so you can get more opportunities,’ she said.

‘This really annoys me,’ she continued. ‘Something I really think is a load of f**king bulls**t is women having each other’s backs, and women don’t.

‘And this is probably really controversial, but I’m gonna say it because there are a lot of women that don’t have other women’s backs, and this is a major f**king example of it.’

She continued to blast Brittany, singling her out for ‘not supporting women’.

‘And I’m sick of people in the media, people who have podcasts, people who have some kind of social following, being all like, “Women support women! We love talking about women, we love supporting women.” But then going and doing that,’ she raged.

‘It’s exactly like what happened to me on MAFS where people were like, “I’m not slut-shaming but let’s make a big deal about the fact that she has an OnlyFans.”

‘Cut the crap! Women supporting women? It doesn’t happen a lot.’

Domenica didn’t stop there, accusing Brittany of doing ‘dumb s**t’ and saying she needed to ‘do better’.

‘I can tell you right now, she was never gonna go on that show and come up against Kyle and actually challenge him,’ Dom said.

‘Why don’t we have women in the media going up against men who are getting paid millions of dollars to talk s**t?’

Domenica then issued her ‘challenge’ to KIIS FM to bring her on air to debate Kyle over the appropriateness of his comments.

Dom also claimed she was originally asked to fill in for Jackie 'O' Henderson on The Kyle and Jackie O Show for a day back in August, before begging KIIS FM to bring her on the show so she could 'challenge' Kyle because Brittany wouldn't
