ABF The Soldiers’ Charity photography competition shows army life at work and home

A stirring collection of photographs capture what life is really like for British service men and women at work and at home.

The captivating images were entered for the national Army charity’s photography competition and show a more human side to military life, on and off duty.

The winning entry ‘Daddy’s girl’ was taken by amateur snapper Steve Jones, who recently became a father himself.

It shows a soldier in uniform walking hand-in-hand with his young daughter down a woodland path.

The runners-up were ‘Veterans in Scarlet’ by Paul Buchanan, which shows a group of elderly ex-servicemen in bright red uniforms, and ‘Take the Strain’ by Shane White, showing a tug of war competition for military training.

Other images that made the final round include ones of soldiers on patrol, parachuting, forge welding and building winter defences.

Army Sergeant Major Glenn Haughton said of the ABF The Soldiers’ Charity photography entries: ‘These images capture everything we espouse – service, duty, bravery and national pride.’

Levison Wood, ambassador of the charity, added: ‘These wonderful photographs really encapsulate the variety of rich experience Army life has to offer.

‘It was tough to choose, but the runners up and the winning image were all fantastic and well-deserved.’

The top 12 entries will feature in The Soldiers’ Charity’s 2019 calendar, with first place securing the front cover.
