Aboriginal actress targeted in racist outburst at supermarket slams ‘whitefellas’ who criticised her

An Aboriginal actress who was racially abused at a supermarket has slammed the ‘whitefellas’ who criticised her for publicly shaming her attacker.

Nakkiah Lui, co-writer and star of television series Black Comedy, was subjected to racist remarks at a supermarket in St Marys in Sydney’s west on Monday night.

The 28-year-old filmed the white Australian woman who hurled vile comments at her, her mother, a Sudanese family and an Indian shop assistant, and shared the clip to Twitter.

While many comments were supportive, Ms Lui had responses questioning her motives for posting the clip online.

‘I’m not sure – I don’t know whether you provoked her,’ one person wrote.

Another said while Ms Lui’s post was not ‘reverse racism’, it was a bad move to publish a video of the woman online.

‘There’s no such thing as reverse racism however white people can be oppressed,’ the woman wrote.

‘I don’t think it was necessary to film her & post it to your 40k plus followers then have a media ‘ally’ write & publish about it, is that journalism to you?’

Another said Ms Lui had baited the woman into reacting while she filmed.

‘She came over to you repeatedly because you were filming her. Certainly call the woman out but don’t film her and post it on social media and then sit back while people go to town on her appearance etc. You’re really no better than she is,’ the comment read.

Ms Lui stood her ground, taking to Twitter again to slam the ‘whitefellas’ who did not agree with her choice.

The 28-year-old wrote: ‘All you whitefellas who are upset about public shaming, imagine how it feels to be SHAMED for your culture and your race by just BEING in PUBLIC. Racism IS public shaming.’

‘And before you say that calling people ”White” is racist, remember that non-white ppl [sic] are defined by their race everyday,’ Ms Lui wrote.

‘The only reason why you hate being called white is because you know that other people suffer from being defined non-white.’

Lui said the incident left her 'shaking' and the 'looks on the family and server were heartbreaking' (pictured)

On Tuesday, Ms Lui and her mother were stood next to a Sudanese family and were waiting to be served by an Indian shop assistant at a supermarket in St Marys.

As they stood in line, an older white Australian woman shouted ‘spot the Aussies’ as she walked past.

She said that her mother went over to confront the woman and called her a racist.

But the woman only replied: ‘Yep, I am racist and proud of it’.

When Ms Lui told the woman her comment was ‘disgusting’, the woman responded by telling her ‘go back where you came from’.

Later, when Lui pulled out her phone to film, the woman began denying she had made any comments at all- and said she shouldn’t be called racist because she is ‘terminally ill’.

‘Don’t treat people like that,’ the starlet says.

‘I wasn’t abusing you, I was talking to a friend actually,’ the woman says.

But when the performer reiterated what she had said, the woman dismissed her.

‘Oh, get over yourself, darling,’ the woman responds.

Lui said the incident left her ‘shaking’ and the ‘looks on the family and server were heartbreaking’.

Her appalled followers were quick to share the video, which has since racked up more than 50,000 views.

‘Horrible person,’ one woman wrote.

Another said: ‘I’m so sorry you experienced this.’

Ms Lui added that the incident was the second time this year someone in her family has been told ‘go back where you came from’ in a supermarket.

In July, her parents were shopping the morning of her wedding when a shop attendant when a white male shopper made discriminatory comments.
