Actor John Jarratt says allegations he raped a teenager 40 years ago are ‘ridiculous and untrue’

Actor John Jarratt has flatly denied allegations he raped a teenager inside a Sydney share house more than 40 years ago. 

The 66-year-old, who is best known for his role in Wolf Creek, maintained his innocence as he spoke publicly for the first time since he was charged on Friday.

‘I’m fine because I’m innocent. I’m good, because I’m a good man,’ he told 9news.

He was questioned in a suburban street when approaching his vehicle and said the allegations were ‘ridiculous and untrue.’

Jarratt is accused of sexually assaulting a woman at share house in Randwick, Sydney, in September 1976.

The alleged victim of sexual assault worked at the Sydney Opera House at the time.

It is understood the pair new each other and they continued to be friends for ten years following alleged incident. 

Defence lawyer Chris Murphy said he was astounded the matter was proceeding.

He also said Jarratt was devastated and shocked by the allegation.

‘He and is lovely wife are most upset about it.’ 

Jarratt has been married four times and is currently married to Rosa Jarratt who was also his first wife.

In December 2017 Jarratt told KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O he never fell out of love with Miano and she is the love of his life.

Eastern Beaches Police Area Command officers have been investigating the alleged incident since December 2017 after the woman came forward about the alleged assault. 

Jarratt was issued with a future court attendance notice on Friday.

He is expected to appear at Waverley Local Court on October 10.

WHO IS JOHN JARRATT 

Jarratt was born in Wongawilli, near Wollongong, New South Wales in 1951.

He graduated from National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in 1973 and his school teacher encouraged him to pursue a career in acting.

Jarratt’s screen debut was The Great Macarthy in 1975. The same year he appeared in Picnic at Hanging Rock.

Jarratt has been married four times and has six children. He is currently married to Rosa Jarratt who was his first wife.

Jarratt was well-known for hosting Better Homes and Gardens in the mid-late 1990s with his (second) wife and actor, Noni Hazlehurst. Jarratt left the show after the couple got divorced and she continued to stay as a host until 2004. 

He is well-known for playing the antagonist in the 2005 horror film Wolf Creek. Jarratt plays serial killer Mick Taylor which was inspired by notorious murderers Ivan Milat and Bradley Murdoch.

Jarratt also starred in the film’s sequel, Wolf Creek 2, which was released in 2014.
