The man who has earned fame on Twitter with the tales of the dead child’s ghost he believes to be haunting his apartment has reported more spooky sightings.
Adam Ellis, who lives in New York, has been documenting the ghostly activities of a ghost named Dear David since August. The abnormal phenomenons, which include his cats staring at the door at midnight every night, unmarked calls, and his local coffee shop appearing to mysterious shut down, have captivated hundreds of thousands of people and left him terrified.
After a couple of weeks of silence, Adam came back on Twitter last week to share the latest two scary happenings, claiming that Dear David is back once again to torment him.
Spooky: Adam Ellis, who lives in New York, who believes his apartment is haunted by a ghost, said a hearse recently popped up in an abandoned warehouse near his home
It continues: The New Yorker then said that a few days later, he spotted a silhouette (circled in red) spying on him from outside his kitchen window
The culprit? In August, Adam shared a drawing of the terrifying-looking child he claims is haunting his apartment, revealing the ghost is called ‘Dear David’
The cartoonist first explained that one of his friends came over to his apartment in order to ‘cleanse’ the place.
While he has received offers from many professional mediums and ghost-hunting TV shows, Adam said he had declined all of them because he wants to avoid ‘sensationalizing’ what has happened to him.
Adam then told his 501,000 followers that for a while, things appeared to return to normal, after several months of escalating anxiety.
‘The cats weren’t gathering at the door anymore. I stopped having dreams,’ he wrote. ‘It was starting to seem like like it was over.’
Victim: Adam has been enthralling Twitter users with his spooky ghost story
But that all changed last week, when Adam passed an abandoned warehouse on his way to work. Interestingly, the warehouse has appeared in his Dear David stories before.
According to Adam, it used to be a bustling food cart repair depot, but it suddenly became vacant, apparently without any previous warning, after the presumed ghost started haunting his apartment. The cartoonist has also said he once had a dream in which Dear David dragged him around an empty warehouse.
Adam said he was walking past the warehouse when he noticed something unusual.
‘This time, all the metal door were wide open, sunlight pouring in. The warehouse was still mostly empty. Except for one thing,’ he wrote. ‘There was a hearse parked near the back wall.’
The cartoonist shared a photo of the parked hearse that he says was in the empty warehouse.
Although he thought the sighting was ‘weird’, Adam didn’t think much of it, until another unusual event unfolded on Thursday night.
‘It was around 11 or so, and I was watching TV on the couch. I went into the dining room to get a drink from the fridge, and noticed both the cats sitting by the far window, staring up at it,’ he wrote. Adam’s cats have a history of staring at shapes that he has linked to Dear David sightings in the past.
‘The window looks out onto the roof of the business next door. I glanced out the window but didn’t see anything,’ he continued.
‘I figured that maybe there was a mouse in the wall or something. I shrugged and grabbed a beer from the fridge. As I went into the kitchen to get the bottle opener, I noticed something.
‘There’s a window in the kitchen, which looks out onto the same roof. And someone was standing on the roof, staring at me.’
ADAM ELLIS RECOUNTS NEW DEAR DAVID SIGHTINGS
At this point, Adam said he ducked down immediately, then switched off the light in the room. He then reached into his pocket to take a photo, which he shared on Twitter.
The picture, while very dark, does appear to show a shape close to Adam’s window. The cartoonist said he tried to take a better photo, but that the silhouette had disappeared by the time he did so.
‘I closed all the blinds and made sure the door was locked and then drank like five more beers until I was too drunk to be scared,’ he added.
‘But now I feel like I’m back at square one. I’m sure it was him. He’s not going away. I don’t know what to do.’
The Dear David saga began in August, when Adam posted a very lengthy Twitter thread that began with the blunt claim: ‘So, my apartment is currently being haunted by the ghost of a dead child and he’s trying to kill me.’
Adam proceeded to share all manner of strange goings on, drawing thousands of fascinated, and freaked-out, followers into his tale of ghostly terror.
The city dweller later shared a spine-chilling update with the followers of his living nightmare in another Twitter thread the following month.
‘It’s happening again,’ he wrote, before beginning to describe the latest twist in the terrifying tale.
‘I’ve been leaving the nanny cam on 24/7. It records every time there’s movement or sound, as you know,’ he added, referring to the amateur surveillance system he set up shortly after the ghostly activities began to take place.
ADAM ELLIS SPOTS DEAR DAVID IN STATUE IN JAPAN IN AUGUST
These cameras had already been used to capture footage of several objects – including a chair – appearing to move on their own inside his home when he was not there.
The latest clips were taken in Adam’s living room on Saturday night, while he was sleeping in his bedroom nearby.
Initially, he drew his followers’ attention to the behavior of his two cats in the clip, particularly his black and white feline, Maxwell, noting that after ‘a few moments’, the animal suddenly ‘freaks out and jumps over something invisible’.
But while the video certainly captures his cat’s rather peculiar movement, Adam’s followers were far more horrified by a seemingly-innocent green class sitting on his coffee table, which appears to move several inches over, seemingly by itself, just after the cat starts leaping around.
‘I shrieked out loud when I saw it. This is TOO MUCH,’ one terrified Twitter follower admitted, while another added: ‘I’ll be at Church reading the bible covered in crystals [and] saging myself if you need me.’
But Adam wasn’t done there. He went on to reveal that the camera had recorded ‘a couple more strange videos’ that same night, noting that they specifically picked up Maxwell sitting up suddenly on his hind legs, as if he had caught sight of something.
‘He’d sit up on his hind legs and peer around the room, as if looking for something (or looking at something?),’ Adam wrote on Twitter, before sharing another video of his cat bizarrely sitting up on the sofa, before batting at something invisible in the air with his paw.
Although Adam admitted that it could possibly be a fly that Maxwell was trying to take down, he claimed he ‘honestly never gets flies’ in his home, adding that it therefore ‘seems unlikely’ – however he didn’t dare to suggest Dear David by name, noting only that he ‘can’t shake the feeling something has made its way into the apartment’.
He signed off the latest installment of his twisted ghost story by admitting that he just ‘can’t explain’ what’s going on in his home, but suggested that he feels no more confident about being there than he did at the end of his last viral thread.
Adam’s story began with a series of very vivid dreams featuring a child with a misshapen head sitting in a green rocking chair at the end of his bed, while he terrifyingly experiences sleep paralysis.
‘For a while he just stared at me, but then he got out of the chair and started shambling toward the bed,’ he said. ‘Right before he reached my bed, I woke up screaming. ‘
A few nights after that horrifying experience, he dreamed of a girl approaching him in a library telling him that the boy he met was called ‘Dear David.’
‘He’s dead. He only appears at midnight, and you can ask him two questions if you said “Dear David” first,’ Adam claims she said. ‘But never try to ask him a third question, or he’ll kill you.’
The beginning of the end? New Yorker Adam Ellis has been sharing terrifying tales of the ghost that he claims is haunting his apartment in a series of tweets
Moving the story on: Having purchased a nanny cam to serve as a form of surveillance in August, Adam revealed last month that the cameras had picked up some scary footage
Spot the glass: Although Adam initially drew attention to the behavior of his cats in the clip, followers pointed out that the green jar on his table actually moves by itself
Not the usual suspect: Although he noted that some people might blame his pets’ behavior on bugs, he claims that it’s not the way the animals would normally react to insects
Not possible: He added that he never really struggles with bugs in his home, making the suggestion all the more unlikely
What’s going on? Adam showed in this image that the camera kept picking up footage of his cat Maxwell (top right corner) sitting up on his hind legs
What on earth? In the final clip shared by Adam, his cat Maxwell can be seen sitting up on the sofa, before batting at something invisible in the air with his paws
Adam was confronted again with David in his dreams soon after and questioned him about how he died, learning it was an accident in a store that saw someone push a shelf onto his head.
He mistakenly asks a third question before waking up petrified. He researches online looking for boys who died in stores in the city but finds nothing.
Adam eventually moves into a larger apartment upstairs from his own and months go by without any sight nor sign of Dear David until suddenly his cats began acting strangely.
‘For the past four nights, my cats gather at the front door at exactly midnight & just stare at it, almost like something is on the other side,’ he said in tweets from earlier this month.
‘Last night I got a weird feeling and looked out the peephole, and I’m dead certain I saw movement on the other side.’
He took photos through the peephole, which she shared with the thread claiming he is ‘certain’ he saw something moving. He also shared a video of one of his cats staring intently at his front door, meowing.
A few weeks later, Adam began another thread explaining various strange things that have been happening to him, including a dream ‘where David was dragging me by the arm through an old abandoned warehouse.’
He woke up with a large bruise on his arm, but assumed that it was the injury that sparked the dream, rather than the other way around.
But then on his way to get coffee he passed a usually busy warehouse that had suddenly been abandoned. In the middle of the room was a single green chair.
He also revealed that faint ‘faces’ have been appearing in photos he has taken and that his cats’ nightly date with the door has become earlier every night.
Adam also claims that he has been getting phone calls from an unmarked number and when he answered once he heard the noise of static before a small voice whispered ‘hello.’ Terrified, he hung up the phone.
‘I didn’t know what else to do. I closed all the curtains in my apartment and turned on every single light. I watched TV until dawn because I was too scared to go to sleep. I sort of feel like I’m losing my mind,’ said.
Adam then returned to update followers on his story on Monday night, revealing that he had installed a home surveillance system in order to keep an eye on his cats when he goes on a trip to Japan in three weeks.
‘It’s basically a nanny cam that connects to the wifi, so you can check in whenever you want. It runs 24/7,’ he explained, before adding that the camera actually sends an alert to his phone whenever it detects movement in his apartment.
‘I decided to test it out this weekend. I was away from home one night, so I set up the camera before I left,’ he went on to say.
‘My phone pinged periodically through the evening, alerting me to the cats running around and playing. Normal stuff.’
But then things took a turn for the creepy – once again.
‘Around 11, it alerted me again that it detected motion, but when I checked the feed of my apartment, I didn’t see anything,’ he wrote, before going on to reveal that after checking in on the feed three times, he actually spotted a green chair in his apartment ricking back and forth on its own, sharing the video of the feed on his account so people could see the extraordinary moment for themselves.
‘I knew it couldn’t be the wind, because I haven’t had the windows open at all this summer (I have AC and like to keep it chilly),’ he said, before admitting that he found the entire episode ‘unnerving’ but that he was doing his best ‘not to panic’.
Half an hour later, however, he received another alert, and this time he checked in on the feed immediately. Much to his horror, the clip from the camera showed a souvenir turtle shell that was mounted on the wall above his bookcase suddenly dropping off the wall.
Although he says he has been too nervous to turn the camera on again, he admitted that he moved the green chair into the hallway, and that he was struggling to keep his cool while in his apartment alone.
His final tweet of the evening informed followers that he was ‘taking a xanax and going to bed’, before he signed off for the evening.
Unsurprisingly, Adam’s ghost story has proved a riveting read for many users, and the first tweet of the thread has been shared more than 50,000 times as well as attracted plenty of ghost-fighting advice from strangers including ‘finding the remains’ of the child and ‘burning them’ or spreading salt around his apartment.
Last month, Adam decided to travel to Japan for two weeks, believing that if he left his apartment long enough, Dear David – whom he has previously drawn, revealing a child with a dented head – would leave him alone. But apparently, the evil spirit has managed to keep tormenting him even from thousands of miles away.
During his last day in Japan, Adam took a walk around the city of Sapporo and ended up in a park.
There, he took photos of a cylindrical statue, which he thought looked interesting. But at one point, Adam said he almost dropped his phone when he spotted a spookily familiar figure.
One element of the statue looks strikingly similar to the representations of Dear David Adam has shared in the past. This version, displayed among other characters in the statue, takes the shape of a baby held in a woman’s arms, who has the same dented head as Dear David.
‘It felt too similar to be a coincidence. I felt dizzy staring up at it, this kid with a dented head,’ Adam wrote after the encounter.
‘I don’t know. Maybe I’m overreacting? Maybe this is nothing? It doesn’t feel like nothing.’
Despite the scary occurrence, Adam made it back to New York safely, and on Friday last week posted a photo of himself getting reunited with one of his cherished cats.
