The home of former Sunderland FC footballer Adam Johnson’s parents was vandalised following his release back in March.

The 31-year-old parent’s Dave and Sonia were forced to scrub off the slur which read ‘peado’, a misspelling of ‘paedo’, on Friday.

Despite scrubbing most of it off, the phrase was still visible on the red brick wall, which they attempted to cover using their car.

A source told The Sun: ‘Adam was horrified when the house was vandalised. His mum was really shaken because it’s clear people know where they live and they clearly have an agenda.’

‘The family have no idea who did this and Sonia feels especially vulnerable about it. They just want to live in peace.’

The insider added: ‘Adam knows he’s a target but his parents aren’t fair game to him and he wants to protect them.

The disgraced footballer’s £2million mansion in Castle Eden, County Durham, behind his parent’s home, is reportedly planning on installing extra security such as CCTV around his property, his cars and his parents’ home.

Johnson was sentenced to a six year jail sentence in March 2016 after he was found guilty of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl who was a fan.

He was released back in March 2019, serving only half of the sentence.

Earlier this month, Adam released a statement apologising for his actions.

In a statement, Johnson said he ‘would like to take this opportunity to publicly express my remorse for my actions’ which ‘led to my conviction and imprisonment’.

‘I am very sorry for the effect my conduct had on those directly and indirectly involved. It should never have happened and I deeply regret what I did,’ he continued.

‘I now want to concentrate on the future and want to demonstrate through my actions that I am committed to repaying them for their support.’
