Adelaide’s Anthony Allan Munro jailed for abusing boys

A former Adelaide scout master who engaged in ‘repulsively evil criminal acts’ has been jailed for more than ten years for abusing two young boys.

Anthony Allan Munro pleaded guilty to ten charges, including some dating back to the 1960s, and was sentenced in court Tuesday.

District Court Judge Paul Slattery described the 72-year-old’s actions as ‘predatory conduct,’ and said they had resulted in inestimable damage.

Munro reportedly groomed the boys by offering them financial and other inducements that he knew their parents could not match.

The offending involved a gross breach of trust and occurred over a protracted period, starting when the boy’s were as young as 11, the judge said.

The judge also said that Munro had ‘violently and repeatedly’ abused the boys between 1965 and 1983 and videotaped one of his acts, according to The Advertiser.

‘Their lives have been forever compromised by the repulsively evil acts you perpetrated upon them,’ Judge Slattery said.

Victim Andrew McIntyre, who agreed to be identified, said he was saddened by the sentence imposed on Munro, calling it too short.

‘I’m very disappointed but that’s the way it goes… it’s not enough.’ he told reporters outside court.

Mr McIntyre also said the impact of Munro’s offending would not go away.

‘Times have changed, we’re all aware of these things,’ he said. ‘When I was a child, it wasn’t spoken about. It went on unchecked.’

Judge Slattery initially imposed an 18-year sentence on Munro but reduced it to ten years because of his guilty pleas.

The judge also set a non-parole period of five years and five months.
