The adventurer Sir Peter Hutchinson left £1million to his ‘murderous’ wife in a will that was drawn up two months after the alleged attack, a new report has revealed.

Sir Peter Hutchinson – the former chairman of trustees of the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh – was an insurance broker from Kippen in Stirlingshire but also travelled the world looking for rare plants.

In October 2018 his wife lady Virginia was accused of attempting to murder him using petrol and he was treated in hospital for minor injuries.

He died at the age of 83 in January last year due to pneumonia and left his wife land and property worth almost £1million in plans decided two months after the alleged attack, according to The Times.

However Lady Virginia died in April last year from a stroke meaning she never got to make the most of what was left to her.

After the alleged attack Lady Virginia attended an initial behind-closed doors hearing at Stirling sheriff court.

At the hearing an order was issued prohibiting the publication of her identity meaning details of the couple’s relationship could not be revealed.

She also did not have to take part in an identity parade and was bailed without making a plea. She then died and the Crown Office confirmed there would be no further proceedings.

Sir Peter – the 2nd Baronet Hutchison of Rossie – left his share of the couple’s £750,000 home to his wife and bequeathed her land in the area worth almost £300,000.

She was also left household contents valued at more than £128,000 by the auction house Sotheby’s.

They included a collection of books, pictures, ornaments, china, jewellery and sporting and garden equipment.

Lady Virginia also inherited a 13-year-old Hyundai Tucson car that was valued at £600.

Sir Peter instructed that the remainder of his estate should be left to the couple’s only child, Sir James Colville Hutchison, 52.

The will was written on December 27, 2018, 24 days before Sir Peter died in Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert, Stirlingshire.

His estate included property in London valued at £3.4 million and a shares portfolio worth more than £4.2 million.

During his life Sir Peter went on several expeditions in Turkey, China and the Himalayas in search of rare plants, mostly rhododendrons.
