AFL Grand Final MCG: Why Tones And I delivered a ‘shocking’ performance

AFL fans slammed Tones And I for her ‘shocking’ pre-show entertainment at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday.

But it seems the singer-songwriter may not be entirely responsible for letting down fans, given that the MCG was built for cricket rather than live musical performances.

The mammoth open-air structure has been long criticised for its poor acoustics, with concert-goers experiencing excessive reverberation, bizarre echoing, garbled noise and sound absorption.

Revealed: The REAL reason why Tones And I delivered (pictured) a ‘shocking’ live performance at the MCG during AFL Grand Final

Indeed, Tones And I is the latest in a string of live performers who have fallen victim to the auditory perils of Australia’s largest stadium.

The most famous example took place in 2011 when Meat Loaf delivered what has been widely regarded as the worst AFL entertainment ever.

Meat Loaf defended his bizarre and off-pitch vocals, however, blaming the MCG for its poor acoustics.

He also accused the AFL management of ‘failing to provide a live piano’ or giving him enough time for a sound check.

In an interview with the Sunday Mail he slammed AFL bosses as ‘jerks’ and labelled his online critics as ‘butt-smellers’, saying: ‘I’m sorry, [the AFL bosses are] jerks. I do not like them.’

‘And I’ll tell you what, anybody that I hear announces that they’re going to play for them, I’m going to write that particular artist a letter and tell them not to,’ he fumed.
