After countless head knocks throughout his playing days, AFL great Brendan Fevola decided to get a brain scan to see if there was lasting damage – and he revealed the results on live radio.

Fevola, 42, said he was ‘scared’ to get the MRI on his brain after an illustrious and bruising 204-game career for Carlton and Brisbane.

After the media highlighted several cases of brain damage among former players, including Gary Ablett Sr, Fevola decided it was time to take the plunge and get the check-up.

Fevola invited radiologist Dr Richard Fleming onto his radio show, Melbourne’s 101.9 The Fox breakfast show Fifi, Fev & Nick to reveal the results on Thursday.

Fortunately for the father of four, the scans revealed no visible damage to his brain.

‘It’s a completely normal brain,’ said Dr Fleming. ‘It should be a relief to him.’

Fevola, who hasn’t kept himself in the best shape since his playing career, admitted the good news was a huge load off his mind.

‘I was a little bit worried, doc,’ said Fevola. ‘I did get hit in the head a fair bit, but I was more worried you’d find something else – like a tumor or something that wasn’t good.

‘You know when people get sick, they always go they were looking for something else and then they found that, and they end up dying from that. That’s what I was fearing.’

Fevola later questioned Dr Fleming as to how good his brain looked.

‘Are you saying it’s a perfect brain?’ he said.

‘It is a perfect brain,’ replied Fleming.

‘We don’t need to speak anymore,’ Fevola joked.
