Controversial AFL star Jesse Hogan has narrowly escaped serious injury after flipping his Volkswagen on its side in a dramatic crash outside a teammate’s home.

The Fremantle Dockers key forward was rushed to hospital after he clipped a parked car in the Perth riverside suburb of Bicton on Sunday morning.

Nearby residents said Hogan, 24, needed help climbing out of the driver’s seat following the single vehicle crash.

Photos from the scene show extensive damage to the front passenger door of the late model white Volkswagen Tiguan, which was on its side.

Prices for the latest model start from $43,000.

The crash occurred outside the home of Dockers teammate Joel Hamling, The West Australian reported.

Hogan was the only occupant in the car at the time.

‘It was a bit strange actually … the car ended up on its side,’ a resident told the publication.

‘He might have been a bit shocked but he didn’t appear injured. He managed to climb out. He didn’t look that fazed (despite) obviously being in a pretty nasty accident.’

In another twist to the drama, Hamling said he wasn’t home at the time and had no idea about the crash until he was told by media outlets.

A Dockers spokesperson told AFL.com.au Hogan was conscious while being taken to by ambulance to Fiona Stanley Hospital and was discharged after a ‘brief period of observation.’

A Fremantle club doctor was with Hogan at the hospital.

The crash occurred the day before Hogan was due to return to pre-season training.

Hogan was given the day off by the Dockers and is expected to start pre-season training on Tuesday.

Hogan spent the second half of the 2019 season on the sidelines recovering from surgery after he injured the navicular bone in his right foot for the second time within 12 months.

Hogan returned to his home state Western Australia in late 2018 on a three-year $2.7 million deal with the Dockers after four seasons with the Melbourne Demons.

He has played 83 AFL games since his debut in 2015 and has booted 165 goals.

He missed nine weeks of the 2017 season due to his battle with testicular cancer.

He was diagnosed a month after he tragically lost his father to cancer.

Hogan is no stranger to controversy.

In 2017, footage emerged of him dancing and smoking at an electronic music festival after he had been granted leave to visit his sick father.

Hogan, who was 22 at the time, appeared to look worse for wear as he moshed with other revellers at the Hot Dub Wine Machine festival in Swan Valley, Perth.

The embattled star was back in the headlines earlier this year when he was dropped by the Dockers for the 2019 season opener after he turned up to training in an unfit state to play and breaking the club’s alcohol policy.

Footage emerged several days later of him dancing in his underwear and a Santa suit with his pants wrapped around his ankles and an unlit cigarette in his right hand.

The club revealed at the time their star forward had made ‘poor alcohol decisions’ and was battling ‘clinical anxiety’.
