AFL premiership player Nathan Broad and his Love Island star wife Tayla Damir tied the knot in the Gold Coast hinterland in October last year.

And while their wedding went smoothly, Nathan has revealed his proposal plans went awry and he was forced to wait weeks to pop the question to Tayla.

He said on the Ausmerican Aces podcast he had originally planned to get down on one knee at the beach in Sorrento, and even told friends about his plans.

But Nathan, 30, had to scrap this idea because Covid-19 forced him into an AFL hub in Sydney.

He eventually decided to propose on the front porch of their home, where the couple would often have coffee together.

But even this humble idea faced obstacles because on the day of the proposal, in June 2021, Tayla didn’t want to go outside because of the cold weather.

‘I planned to get engaged to Tayla down at Sorrento and told a few people – and probably told too many people, to be honest,’ he began.

‘And then we got called into this mini hub where we went to Sydney for like two or three weeks. So, then that postponed those plans, and I was like, ‘Oh, f**k, I have f**ked up here. I’ve told too many people and they’re going to tell their (partners) or someone’, so I was (nervous). Luckily, everyone was good to me.’

‘In the end I realised I just wanted to do it at home on the porch where we have a coffee every morning, just something very low-key and basic.’

He said he eventually got Tayla outside to propose and during the proposal he got so nervous he shouted ‘Will you marry me?’ at her. He popped the question in June 2021.

‘It was a freezing cold morning, we normally go out and have a coffee, but not when it’s that cold, it’s just stupid. And I needed to get it done, so I was like, ”Let’s just go and have a coffee outside”, and she’s like, ”stuff that, it’s freezing, I’m not going out there”.

‘I started breathing real heavily and going real weird. And she’s like, ”are you okay?” And I’m like, ”yeah, yeah, all good.”

‘I just needed to do it, pull the band-aid off, so I’ve got up, turned around, and I’ve had this speech prepared for probably five weeks of what to say, how much I love her, how amazing she is, all this stuff, and I got up, got on one knee, looked at her, and was just like, ”…will you marry me?” Just yelled in her face, ”Will you marry me?!”

He then said he decided to propose at home as they would often have coffee on their front porch, but it was incredibly cold on the day of the proposal and Tayla didn't want to go outside. He popped the question in June 2021 (pictured)

‘And I’m pretty jovial, larrikin, like having a laugh – and she’s looked at me and said, ”You’re kidding”. And I’m like, ”Nah”, and yelled at her again, ”will you marry me?!” And she’s like, ”Yeah of course.”

Nathan said the rest of the proposal was a ‘blur’.

The couple tied the knot in the Gold Coast hinterland in October last year surrounded by family, friends and fellow influencers, all of whom were banned from using their phones as Tayla walked down the aisle.

The Love Island winner, 25, previously told The Herald Sun she and Richmond player Nathan, were planning to follow the ‘unplugged’ wedding trend by asking guests not to use recording devices.

‘When I walk down the aisle, I want to see everyone’s face rather than the back of phones so in that case it probably will be a no-phone wedding,’ she explained.

Tayla posted their beautiful wedding photos on Instagram at the time, alongside the caption: ‘Mr and Mrs Broad -17.10.22.’

In February, the pair announced they are expecting their first child together, a daughter.

Tayla also shared a photo of her ultrasound, as well as showing off her growing baby bump.

‘Cooking for three!’ she wrote in her caption alongside the image, in which the former reality star stood at a stove with her belly bared.

The pair first started dating back in 2019.
