One of the world’s leading distance runners, Agnes Jebet Tirop, has been stabbed to death at her home in Kenya.

The 25-year-old, a two-time world 10,000m bronze medallist, died of wounds to her neck and abdomen.

A criminal investigation is underway. Tom Makori, head of police for the area, said: ‘Her husband is still at large and preliminary investigations tell us he is a suspect because he cannot be found.

‘Police are trying to find him so he can explain what happened to Tirop.’ 

Tirop’s death comes only a month after she broke the world 10,000m women-only road record in Germany.

Athletics Kenya said: ‘We are this afternoon distraught to learn about the untimely death of world 10,000m bronze medallist Agnes Tirop. Kenya has lost a jewel who was one of the fastest-rising athletics giants on the international stage, thanks to her eye-catching performances on the track.’

Tirop was fourth in the Olympic 5,000m final in Tokyo in August.
