AGT: Quin Bommelje’s dance routine proves age really is just a number

A 71-year-old dancer took the judges breath away as she showed off her flexibility and strength during her jaw-dropping performance on America’s Got Talent.

Quin Bommelje, a ballroom dancer who grew up in Thailand, proved that age is just a number when she took the stage with her 35-year-old partner, Misha Vlasov, on Tuesday night’s episode of the competition show.

The dancer wore a silver leotard and strappy heels for the performance in which Misha lifted Quin in the air and spun her around to the beat of Michael Sembello’s hit Maniac.

Her partner flipped her around and tossed her with ease while she did a series of heel stretches and splits.

At one point, Quin wrapped her legs around Misha’s neck and he spun her around in circles. Confetti rained down on them as the finished yet another unforgettable performance.

Earlier in the season, Quin opened up about her upbringing in a pre-taped packed that aired before one of her performances with Misha.

Quin explained that she grew up in a small village in Thailand and would never ‘in a million years’ have imagined that she would on a show like America’s Got Talent.

Although most would assume she has been dancing all of her life, she didn’t fall in love with ballroom dancing until 10 years ago, when she and her husband took a class together.

‘I realized dance was my dream,’ she said. ‘After three years, my husband can’t keep up with me… and after that I had to find a young man to dance with.’

After she performed that night, she and Misha received the show’s highly-coveted Golden Buzzer, which sends the act to the next round regardless of the other judges’ votes.

‘You know, you say you want to inspire people of a certain age, but you have inspired everybody of all ages. It was truly a remarkable performance,’ judge Martina McBride said as she slammed the buzzer.

Unfortunately for Quin and Misha, not all of the judges were as impressed with their latest performance. Howie Mandel questioned whether everyone should be judging their performance merely on the fact she moves so well for a 71-year-old.

‘People are always telling me, “Howie, you’re sexy … for your age.” So I’m not really sexy,’ he joked, adding: ‘I don’t know if aside from her age it’s worthy of moving on.’

However Simon insisted she will ‘inspire people,’ and Mel recalled the movie Weird Science as she told her: ‘It’s like someone created you — you’re not human and you’re not normal.

‘What you do is incredible, regardless of your age or not. You kill it on the dance floor, whether you’re 22 or 70.’

It was revealed on Wednesday night’s episode of the show that Quin and Misha didn’t make it to the semi-finals, but it doesn’t seem like the disappointment will keep her from dancing.
