Ajax on same number of away knockout stage wins this season than Man City ever

Ajax’s win at Tottenham in Champions League semi-final first leg was Dutch club’s third away win in knockout stages this season… the same as Man City have managed in their history

  • Ajax won the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Tottenham
  • They beat Mauricio Pochettino’s side 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
  • Ajax have recorded three away wins in the knockout stages this season
  • That is the same number as Manchester City have managed in their history

Ajax continued to impress in this season’s Champions League as they beat Tottenham in the first leg of their semi-final on Wednesday night.

Donny van de Beek’s strike in the 15th minute gave Ajax a crucial away goal but also meant the Dutch champions have won three away games in the knockout stages.

Erik ten Hag’s side have beaten Real Madrid, Juventus and now Tottenham away from home.

Donny van de Beek’s goal was enough to seal a 1-0 win over Tottenham on Tuesday night

It is the same number that Manchester City have managed in their history. City beat Schalke this season, Basle last year and Dynamo Kyiv in 2016.

Some are tipping Ajax to go all the way and win the Champions League this season – something they haven’t done since 1995.

‘A fantastic achievement,’ said Ten Hag after beating Tottenham on Tuesday.

‘We fought like lions. We are halfway there and in good shape. The willpower was very nice to see.’

Ajax host Tottenham in the second leg of the semi-final next Wednesday and Ten Hag says there is still work to do to seal their place in the final.

He said: ‘I think it’s an excellent result for us. We won the game. We are satisfied. We have a very good starting point, but we’re only halfway through,’ he told reporters.

‘We can play football in different styles. We can defend very well. We have a team that works together really well; they can fight together really well.’
