Alan Jones accidentally awards radio caller a $2,000 prize

He may be a veteran radio broadcaster, but Alan Jones proved he can still fall victim to an awkward gaffe or two in the studio.

The 2GB presenter was left seriously red-faced after wrongly awarding a caller a $2,000 cash prize on The Alan Jones Breakfast Show.

The 77-year-old stuttered in alarm, ‘Oh… I’m sorry. I’ve stuffed up!’ before sheepishly explaining to the listener that she would not be getting the cash.

‘Oh, I’m sorry. I’ve stuffed up!’ Alan Jones, 77, accidentally awarded a radio caller a $2,000 prize

To win the money, callers have to answer the phone with ‘2GB For Me’ or ‘4BC For Me’ within the first five rings.

Joanna from Blackhurst answered her call with the standard ‘hello’ instead – meaning she didn’t win the money.

But in his enthusiasm, Alan shouted breathlessly: ‘Is that Joanna? Joanna from Blackhurst! You’ve won two thousand bucks!’

The presenter then paused and began to frantically backtrack.

I take it back! The 77-year-old stuttered in alarm, 'Did I get it wrong?' before sheepishly explaining to the listener that she would not be getting the cash - because she answered her call by saying 'hello' instead of '2GB For Me'

‘Oh shh.. I’m sorry. You actually didn’t. Did I get it wrong? I got in early. I’ve stuffed up!’ he said, chuckling awkwardly.

No doubt referring to his producers in the studio, Alan added: ‘They’re all frowning at me now saying “you cant do this”. Joanna you were supposed to say 2GB For Me.’

But determined to salvage the situation, he declared valiantly: ‘We’re going to cheat here. It’s the Alan Jones Show, I make the rules!’

Ross Greenwood explained that they could not give Joanna the money anyway – forcing Alan to tell her she could not take the cash.

Wince-inducing: Alan then declared that the show would give the caller the money anyway - but producers refused

Sounding defeated, Joanna replied: ‘OK. Alright. Fair enough.’

Alan said apologetically: ‘Oh God, it’s a rough old show. What a miserable lot we are.

They’re all frowning at me now. Joanna you were supposed to say 2GB For Me.’

‘We’re going to cheat here. It’s the Alan Jones Show, I make the rules,’ Alan says, before he’s told categorically by Ross that Joanna can’t just have the money.

Not giving up, Alan later rang his old friend Ray Hadley, and the pair decided to make things right by giving their own money to Joanna.

‘You and I are going to put in, this is nothing to do with the competition,’ Ray said triumphantly.

They got there in the end! Not giving up, Alan later rang his old friend Ray Hadley (pictured), and the pair decided to make things right by giving their own money to Joanna
