‘Misunderstanding’: Radio shock jock Alan Jones apologises to Jacinda Ardern after being labelled an ‘appalling misogynist’ for telling the PM to ‘shove a sock down her throat’

Alan Jones has written a letter of apology to New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern after saying Scott Morrison should ‘shove a sock down her throat’.

The radio shock jock sparked furious backlash earlier this week when he said Ardern had ‘no idea what she’s talking about’ when she was ‘preaching on global warming’ at a Pacific Islands Forum in Tuvalu.

‘Prime Minister, I would like to assure you that I did not intend to suggest any violence towards you,’ he wrote in an email to Ardern on Friday afternoon.

The apology comes after Jones took to the airwaves on Wednesday saying: ‘I just wonder whether Scott Morrison is going to be fully briefed to shove a sock down her throat.’

‘She is a joke this woman, an absolute and utter lightweight. These people are an absolute joke and Jacinda Ardern is the biggest joke.’

He later called her a ‘hypocrite’ and ‘gormless’ for her decision to exclude agriculture from New Zealand’s carbon-neutral pledge.

Ms Ardern has pledged New Zealand will be carbon-neutral by 2050, but has not included agriculture or methane in that figure.

Together, they contribute about half of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions.

‘I used the language earlier on and, forgive it, but this is the farting and burping livestock, 50 per cent,’ he said. ‘So when is Jacinda Ardern going to start culling the dairy herds in New Zealand?’

On Friday afternoon Jones was forced to apologise for offending anyone with his comments, after being labelled an ‘appalling misogynist’ by outraged Australians and Kiwis.

Social media users, including Australian Council of Trade Unions chief Sally McManus, slammed his remarks as ‘disgusting’.

Mr Morrison also criticised Jones, saying the 2GB presenter’s comments were ‘way out of line’.

‘The comment has been relayed to me; on what’s been reported to me, I find that very disappointing and of course that’s way out of line,’ he said.

‘I have two daughters, so you can expect that’s how I would feel personally about it. I’ll leave others to explain what they’ve said and how they’ve said it.’

After collective outrage, Jones was forced to pack peddle.

‘What I have said has given offence and I have written to the Prime Minister to apologise. My comments were careless… I was wrong’

‘If anything I say gives offence I am always happy to apologise.

‘We don’t want that kind of offence to be given in 2019. It’s unacceptable and I accept it is unacceptable.

‘When that happens you have just got to man up and apologise for it.’

Prior to sending an apology email to Arden, the Radio 2GB host said his comments about Ardern had been wilfully ‘misinterpreted’ by his many critics.

‘Of course what I meant to say was that Scott Morrison should tell Ms Ardern to ‘put a sock in it’,’ Jones said in a statement on Thursday afternoon.

‘There are many people who would relish the opportunity to misinterpret things that I have said as we have seen online this afternoon.

‘Of course I would not wish any harm to Jacinda Ardern.

‘This wilful misinterpretation distracts from my point that she was wrong about climate change and wrong about Australia’s contribution to carbon dioxide levels.’
