Family man: Alan Ritchson, who plays the title role on the upcoming Amazon show Reacher, revealed his family was in a car crash this week

‘Big shoutout to @gmc for building a truck that could take it on the chin like a champ. You kept my wife and 3 young boys safe and I’m grateful,’ he wrote.

‘They were rear ended at a stop last night by someone doing 45mph. No serious injuries in either vehicle, thank God.’

He continued: ‘These unexpected moments can disrupt the lives of everyone involved but health is something many of us take for granted.’

Ritchson continued: ‘Glad everyone walked away and my thoughts are with the other passengers. But Good lord the truck didn’t budge.’

In an emotional Instagram post last year he revealed that his love for his family and desire to have ‘more time’ with them saved him during his suicide attempt.

He revealed that ‘a perfect storm of two things: a furious pursuit of personal passions and a poverty of purpose. Ever an opportunist, I got swept away in the flash floods of career demands. I chose to become a slave to an unforgiving master – ambition.’

Ritchson explained that he had ‘justified my career overload as a temporary pain for an eventual long term comfort for the family. But lives built on cute little lies always poke holes in the families raft.’

He wrote movingly: ‘As I hung there in my attic, I saw my boys pleading with me to stay. To pour into them. I realized in that moment purpose is found not in self – but in others. It was my dying wish… more time with my family. My career, money, fame… was infinitely far from my mind. I climbed up for air and died that day.’

His new show stars him as the ex-military comic book character Jack Reacher, who was previously portrayed on the big screen by Tom Cruise.

I’ve come to be comfortable taking on outsized roles. Reacher has incredibly large shoes to fill; he’s a bit of a superhero,’ Ritchson told Entertainment Weekly.

‘”I felt intimidated learning the fight choreography. This fighting style, I was on my heels, wondering if I could pull it off. It’s so precise…,’ he said.

‘We rebuilt me as a fighter. Some of the fights that we spent a month and a half learning are just three minutes on screen, but the fans deserve to see somebody move the way that a killing machine like him can.’
