Alan Shearer tells Gary Neville he’d love to have played for Jurgen Klopp

Alan Shearer believes Phil Foden will become the ‘best’ footballer in the world and says the only good thing about Sunderland is the fact they are in League One. 

The former England footballer took part in a quick fire question and answer session with Gary Neville and revealed his thoughts about modern day footballers, pre-match superstitions and current Premier League managers.  

During the interview, Shearer also admitted that he would have loved to play for Jurgen Klopp as he thinks the German manager has a ‘great attitude’.

When asked which young player will become the best in the world, Shearer told The Overlap: ‘Phil Foden. Look at where he started to where he is now. He has always been special. He’s been managed in a great way. 

‘Frustrating at times for him and for us as we want to watch him because of the ability he has. He is some talent.’

Shearer also said he have loved to play for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp as he thinks the German manager has a ‘great attitude’ .

When asked which Premier League manager he would have liked to play for, Shearer replied: ‘When you look at Liverpool and Manchester City now and the chances they can create. So, Jurgen Klopp I suppose. I think he has a great attitude.’ 

The former England captain also gave an insight into his pre-match superstitions, claiming he never liked to score goals in the warm-up. 

Such an answer took Neville back, considering Shearer scored 260 goals across 14 Premier League seasons.

Shearer said: ‘I didn’t like smashing the ball into the net in the warm-up. I felt if you put one in from 25 yards in the warm-up, your chances of doing it again half an hour later in the game were pretty slim. 

‘So I didn’t like that at all. I didn’t like having shooting session on the pitch.’

Shearer also used the opportunity to poke fun at his old rivals – Sunderland. When asked what the best thing about the club was, the former Newcastle player said: Is there anything good about Sunderland? The best thing is they’re in League One.’ 

To which Gary replied saying: ‘That’s brutal. Sorry to all the Sunderland fans watching this.’ 

The Tyne–Wear derby – also known as the North East derby – has always been a fiercely competitive fixture between Sunderland and Newcastle. 

Shearer also poked fun at his old rivals – Sunderland. When asked what the best thing about the club was, the former Newcastle player said: Is there anything good about Sunderland?

Shearer was no stranger to the derby during the course of his career. He won six times in 11 games and scored a total of three goals. 

His most memorable goal came at the Stadium of Light in their a 4-1 win. He scored a penalty before going off injured. 

Shearer has always spoke fondly about his time at Newcastle – even though he never won the title with the club. 

When asked his he would half his goal tally to have been crowned champions, he said ‘absolutely’. 

Shearer told Neville: ‘Oh 100 per cent. I would have just scored one goal if I could have won the title with Newcastle. Absolutely.’
