Alanis Morissette claims children should be taught about rape as she discusses own experiences

Alanis Morisette has claimed that children should be taught about the traumas surrounding sexual abuse and rape on a deeper level.

The singer, 44, has previously spoken about her own experience with assault and is speaking out again following the launch of her musical, Jagged Little Pill, based on her 1995 album which deals with several topics of trauma.

Reasoning that ‘healthy sexuality’ is not taught in school, Alanis told The Sun: ‘There are many people addicted to sex, traumatised by sexual trauma and experiencing the fallout of that for the rest of their lives.’

Alanis touched on her own experience with sexual trauma in her 2002 hit, Hands Clean, which was rumoured to be about her dating a much older actor when she was just 14 years old.

Lyrics from the hit include ‘Ooh this could be messy you don’t seem to mind /Ooh don’t go telling everybody overlook this supposed crime.

‘We’ll fast forward to a few years later / And no one knows except the both of us /And I have honored your request for silence / And you’ve washed your hands clean of this.’

Alanis explained she was ‘so happy’ lyrics from that song appear in her new musical, which she claims is only now being treated with the shock and condemnation she believed the lyrics should have provoked when it was released 16 years ago.

‘I often wondered why a song with this subject matter was received so neutrally. Perhaps, years ago, it wasn’t received at all,’ she admitted. ‘For how much we were all still turning a blind eye to overt and covert sexual abuse.’

Jagged Little Pill opened last month in Massachusetts and tell the story of a multi-generation, multiracial suburban family grappling with a series of disturbing events.

Alanis has spoken out before about how songwriting has helped her work through emotional trauma, including depression.

The singer – who shares two children with husband and rapper Mario ‘Souleye’ Treadway told You magazine: ‘The degree and intensity of my postnatal depression shocked me.

‘I am predisposed to depression, but what surprised me this time was the physical pain. I hadn’t realised the depths to which you can ache: limbs, back, torso, head, everything hurt – and it went on for 15 months. I felt as if I was covered in tar and everything took 50 times more effort than normal.

‘I wished I could have cried but there was no relief during that time; my version of depression is almost below crying where there is just despondency.

‘Amazingly, it didn’t hinder the creative process and I wrote the album. I had various therapies and now I feel all light and springy.’
