Real Sociedad’s Champions League hopes suffered a huge blow as they were defeated 2-0 by Alaves on Thursday.
Borja Sainz scored his first goal for the home side, tapping in a cross from Lisandro Magallan. The goal was initially ruled out for offside but was awarded following a lengthy VAR review.
Martin Aguirregabiria ensured victory in the sixth minute of injury time, finishing into an empty net after Álex Remiro had saved from Joselu
Both teams had a player sent off in the final ten minutes. Sociedad’s right-back Joseba Zaldúa saw red for a second yellow on 81 minutes and Alaves’ Tomás Pina followed shortly after.
The result means Sociedad remain fifth, two points behind Atletico Madrid who thrashed Osasuna 5-0 on Wednesday.
