Alex Wer carves masterpieces into illuminated pumpkins

Intricate masterpieces of iconic movie characters are carved into pumpkins as seen in a series of photos of the unique artwork.

A candle inside illuminates the artwork, bringing to light the spooky faces of Beetlejuice, The Joker, and Freddy Kruger.

But not all the carvings are scary. Kid friendlier ones include Elsa from Frozen, The Little Mermaid and Lady and the Tramp.

Wer began pumpkin carving in 2009 after his wife asked him to carve one for her office’s Open House. It was such a hit that requests came flooding in for custom logos and children’s portraits.

Thirty-five orders for custom business logos later, the ‘orange empire’ was born.

Wer has used ‘faux pumpkins’ from the beginning and doesn’t recommend using an open flame to illuminate them from the inside.

The artist said about his first experience carving: ‘Since it was a few weeks until Halloween, my options were to carve a real pumpkin and have it die within a week, or try my hand at craft pumpkins which would last forever.

Wer’s process is referred to as a ‘four color’ technique.

The technique involves carving at multiple depths: one completely cut out, two of differing levels, and another untouched layer for the darkest areas of the image.

The father-of-two has now started experimenting with five-layer carving to add extra detail.

And The Pumpkin Geek business has done exceptionally well.

In 2013, Wer won the inaugural Geekie Award for Best Art/Craft. After this recognition, his career soared and he has since provided pumpkins for Netflix, ESPN, and Legendary Entertainment and been featured in People Magazine.

Today, Wer’s impressive pumpkins are famous and his clients include celebrities such as Gene Simmons, Busy Philipps, Jeri Ryan, Ming Na, and Joe Montegna.
