American Girl is further diversifying its doll range with the launch of a new character from Hawaii.

Nanea Mitchell is the latest addition to the American Girl family – and she is the brand’s first ever native Hawaiian doll.

The sweet character joins 10 other dolls in the BeForever collection of diverse and historical characters and follows three months after the introduction of the first Korean American doll Suzie ‘Z’ Yang.

New girl on the block: Nanea Mitchell is from Honolulu, Hawaii from 1941 and is adding diversity to the American Girl’s increasingly diverse range of dolls

The 18-inch bronzed doll comes complete with a corresponding book which tells the story of Nanea growing up in Honolulu in 1941 in the midst of World War II and in the wake of Pearl Harbor.

The American Girl Doll company hopes to educate their young consumers on the hardships of growing up on the front lines of the war and even hired a five-member advisory board to assure the historical accuracy and cultural authenticity of her character .

Nanea’s character dons a red top, white button shorts, and a flower in her hair. Her wardrobe also includes 40s era ensembles and two traditional hula dancing outfits.

The doll will retail for $115 and will honor military families by raising money for donations for the American Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces program for the whole year. The American Girl company has vowed to match each dollar.

With the character’s launch the company hopes to give a historical and uplifting resource for children.

‘We hope Nanea’s powerful story of resilience, responsibility to others, and contributing for the common good — or kokua, as it’s known in Hawaii— will resonate with girls,’ Katy Dickson, president of American Girl said.

She added that the new character will also teach about strength and courage.

‘…and show them they have the power within to face the obstacles that come their way,” said Katy Dickson, president of American Girl.
