  • The 28-year-old actor received injuries to his chest and abdomen on Saturday 
  • He was rushed to hospital and underwent several hours of abdominal surgery 
  • He succumbed to his injuries, which he suffered while repairing a howitzer 
  • Singapore’s defence ministry is  investigating incident to determine faults

Singaporean actor Aloysius Pang has died in New Zealand during military training. 

The 28-year-old actor suffered serious injuries to his chest and abdomen on Saturday while he was repairing the insides of a Singaporean self-propelled howitzer, which is a piece of artillery that looks similar to a small tank.

‘Despite surgical attempts to repair damaged organs and putting him on artificial life support, CFC (NS) Pang succumbed to the injuries and passed away,’ the Singapore Ministry of Defence said in an official statement.  

His death is being investigated by the coroner.

‘Throughout the past few days in the hospital, it has been a difficult time for us,’ they said.

‘Every news that were brought upon us since his last op was devastating with little signs of hope on his recovery. 

‘We all broke down when the medical team spoke to us that his condition is worsening and we should be prepared for the worst. 

‘We’re going to lose a brother. And my parents are going to lose their precious son whom is only 28.’ 

In a previous statement, the ministry revealed that the actor, also known as Pang Wei Chong, was participating in Exercise Thunder Warrior at the Waiouru training area, south of Taupo. 

Pang was rushed to Waikato Hospital on Saturday and underwent several hours of abdominal surgery.

On Monday, he underwent a follow-up surgery but  his condition deteriorated. 

Pang’s family flew to be at his bedside on Monday and were with him when he died. 

On Wednesday, the medical team at Waikato Hospital announced that Pang’s condition worsened and once again required additional surgery. 

The ministry described Pang as an ‘Operationally Ready National Serviceman’ indicating that he had completed his full-time service.

He is described as an armament technician and his rank is corporal first class.

Singapore’s defence ministry said it was investigating the incident to determine the cause.
