AMANDA PLATELL on Rod Stewart’s debt to four very wise women

Nearly half a century ago, a 26-year-old Rod Stewart had a hit album, Every Picture Tells A Story.

The title track has been seen as a song about a man indulging in flings with numerous women, then returning home having learned some tough lessons.

So what could be more symbolic of the Do Ya Think I’m Sexy rocker’s colourful life than a photo of him alongside four of the five women with whom he has fathered eight children.

Taken at a family party, it is believed to be the first time that so many of these so-called ‘Rodmothers’ have been seen together.

Present were first wife Alana, aged 74 like Rod, Kelly Emberg, 60, Rachel Hunter, 49, and his current wife of 12 years, Penny, 48.

The only mother missing was Susannah Hourde, with whom he had a daughter, now aged 56, who was given up for adoption. Pictured is Rod Stewart with ex-wife Kelly Emberg

The only mother missing was Susannah Hourde, with whom he had a daughter, now aged 56, who was given up for adoption.

At first sight, such a picture suggests a story of sexual excess, unfaithfulness and abandonment.

Yes, feckless men who father children they have no intention of caring for and who dump the mother are rightly condemned.

But, partly due to his fabulous wealth, in his own inimitable Rod-like way, the singer of Some Guys Have All The Luck has presided over his extended family.

As this week’s picture seems to prove, he’s managed to stay close to all but one of the mothers of his children.

Indeed, this does ‘tell a story’.

Whereas family court lists across the country are tragically littered with cases of fathers refusing to take financial responsibility for their children, Rod Stewart — reckoned to be worth £180 million — has done his bit.

Present were first wife Alana, aged 74 like Rod, Kelly Emberg, 60, Rachel Hunter, 49, and his current wife of 12 years, Penny, 48 (pictured together with children Alastair and Aiden after he received his knighthood at Buckingham Palace)

But I believe this is more of a tribute to the courage and wisdom of the women in his life.

Above all, they have kept close for the well-being of their children, aware how important it is for youngsters to know their father.

In a world with so many broken relationships, squabbling couples ought to ponder the terrible damage being done to their children.

Bury the bitterness, try to remember the happy times, honour the love that resulted in a shared child — for their sake as much as for yours.

Of course, all this is easier for a multi-millionaire. And, no doubt, Rod’s getting too old in his leopard-skin loafers to keep pulling younger women.

But if other men look at this picture and it teaches them to respect the estranged mothers of their children, Rod Stewart will have done a service that merits his knighthood.

After the three-part TV documentary about Jade Goody — The Reality Star Who Changed Britain — her ex, Jeff Brazier, said he didn’t let their two sons, aged 16 and 14, watch, as it was too harrowing.

There was a particularly sad scene when the 27-year-old was told she had terminal cervical cancer.

Instead, he wants the boys to remember their mum in a warm and lovely way.

What comfort it must have been in her dying days that Jade knew there was a loving father to continue to care for her children and keep uplifting memories of her alive.

England may have lost the Ashes in one morning of abject play yesterday, but the abiding highlight for cricket fans was Jofra Archer, who took six Aussie wickets the previous day.

What magnificent eye candy for any ladies who mistakenly think cricket is the world’s most boring sport.

  • Friends of Megs and Harry have been falling over themselves to defend the couple’s £20,000 per journey private jet flights, claiming the royal eco-campaigners offset their carbon footprint by planting trees. Jolly good, but at this rate, by their second wedding anniversary next May, they will have to replant the whole blazing Amazon rainforest.
  • As Harry’s final pre-Meghan girlfriend, Cressida Bonas, announces she is engaged, I can’t help wonder how different things might have been if he had wed Cressy. She’s lovely, clever — oh, and her boundless talents include discretion and modesty.
  • What is it with Prince Andrew his ex, Fergie, and feet? Their marriage ended after she was photographed having her toes sucked by a lover in France. Now we are told ‘Randy Andy’ allegedly had his feet massaged by two young women in the New York mansion of his serial sex offender pal Jeffrey Epstein. What a heel!

Ahead of the new series of The Great British Bake Off, judge Paul Hollywood says the contestants are so young — average age 31 — that they are softies, and shed more tears than on any other series.

‘Yes, I made them cry,’ he admits smugly. Hollywood, 53, has made a lot of women cry.

Not least his former wife after his extra-marital affairs destroyed their 20-year marriage, and his most recent ex-girlfriend, 24-year-old Summer Monteys-Fullam.

  • As a passionate Leaver, I’m so glad we have a PM who believes in Brexit. But I was unimpressed to see pictures of Boris Johnson prematurely celebrating, by punching his fists in the air, on his return to London from Berlin and Paris. It was less Churchillian and more like a rickety Rocky Balboa.
  • Photos of Boris this week revealed two surprising facts — he’s as short as 5ft 9in Emmanuel Macron and more portly than Angela Merkel.
  • Within a year of stepping down as PM, Tony Blair looked ten years younger, slim and tanned. Just three years on from quitting No 10, David Cameron has been spotted in Cornwall looking pasty white and porky. Clearly, it’s less healthy being holed up in a shepherd’s hut writing your memoirs than racing around as a ‘peace envoy’ on dictators’ private jets.
  • If Downing Street officials claim that not a penny of taxpayers’ money is being spent on the PM’s chatelaine Carrie Symonds, who paid for the blacked-out Honda SUV and security guard to ferry her to the American embassy in London to disentangle her U.S. visa problems?

Glasgow University has set aside £20 million to ‘atone’ for its role in the slave trade hundreds of years ago.

If there are any more millions to spare, the daft university bosses should spend them on living victims of failing social policies — Glaswegian children who have some of the most appalling levels of literacy and numeracy in the Western world.

Not long after 93-year-old Betty Munroe was robbed in her home by thugs pretending to be police officers, she died of ‘broken heart syndrome’. Undoubtedly, a factor was that they stole her late husband Frank’s watch.

The story had a particular poignancy for me. My late dad was called Frank and I wear his watch, his last living gift to me. It’s worth very little to anyone else but is priceless to me. I suspect I would die defending it.

An estimated 200 Type 2 diabetes sufferers go blind or lose a limb every day, and the cost of obesity to the NHS is more than £10 billion a year.

Meanwhile, Stephen Fry reveals he has lost 5 ½ st by walking more and ‘eating sensibly’ and Jeremy Clarkson has shed 2 st by munching lettuce.

The celebrity duo’s diet success proves obesity is not a disease but a lifestyle choice. Although in the case of Fry and Clarkson, they could have lost much more if they reduced the size of their egos at the same time.
