American bishop who preached at the royal wedding will undergo prostate cancer surgery

The American bishop who passionately addressed attendees of the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will soon undergo surgery to treat his prostate cancer on Tuesday, July 31, he announced yesterday.

Most Reverend Michael Bruce Curry, who presides over the Episcopalian Church, was diagnosed a few months ago and likely knew he was sick when he traveled to the UK to speak at the royal wedding.

There several possible treatments for prostate cancer, including radiation, hormone and chemo therapies.

Bishop Curry has elected to have his prostate glad surgically removed and said in a statement that ‘the prognosis looks very good and quite positive.’

His choice to treat the disease surgically – and the reverend’s optimism – may suggest that his cancer is in an early stage.

‘The news about prostate cancer is there are great treatment options that can put your 10 year life expectancy close to 99% if diagnosed early and found to have low grade cancer,’ says Dr Jamin Brahmbhatt a urologist at Orlando Health in Florida.

Removal of the prostate gland is considered a ‘cure’ for the cancer in cases where the disease has not metastasized, or spread, elsewhere in the groin or body.

Survival rates for men with early stage prostate cancer are excellent, with nearly 100 percent surviving at least five years after diagnosis, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Most Reverend Curry seems confident in his chances of being among the survivors, and intends to only take a four to six week sabbatical from his post with the Church.

‘I plan to resume my duties in early September and I do not anticipate any significant changes in my commitments,’ he wrote in his statement.

The Reverend’s face, name and especially his voice become known in households around the world after he was invited to speak at the royal wedding on the recommendation of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Wellby.

In his sermon there, entitled ‘The Power of Love, Most Reverend Curry spoke animatedly about the ability of love to heal.

The Most Reverend tweeted part of his announcement yesterday, notifying members of the Episcopalian Church of his diagnoses and treatment plan, and asking they 'say a prayer'

‘Love can help heal when nothing else can…whether on mountaintops of happiness and through valleys of hardship,’ he said.

Curry seems to be drawing on the medical support of his doctors, the suggestions of prostate cancer survivors and the love of his friends and family.

‘I have spoken with several others who have gone through this, and who have offered both encouragement and helpful advice. I will be in the hospital for at least a day, then at home to recuperate,’ he wrote in his statement.

‘I am very blessed with a wonderful family, a first-rate medical team, a great staff, dear colleagues and friends, a calling to which I have given my life, and above all a good, great and loving God in whose hands we always remain,’ he added.

‘So, do say a prayer. And know that I look forward to being back at my post in September.’
