American Idol finalist Oliver Steele says Katy Perry ‘is not a bully, nor does she shame people’ … amid reports she might quit series over how she’s been portrayed
American Idol finalist Oliver Steele has taken to the defense of the show’s Katy Perry amid claims she has made nasty and pointed remarks toward contestants during the competition’s controversial 21st season.
Steele, 25, took to Instagram on Saturday with a statement defending the pop star, 38, amid DailyMail.com’s exclusive report that the musical artist is on the verge of quitting the ABC series, feeling she’s been ‘thrown under the bus by producers’ who’ve positioned her to be the ‘nasty judge’ on the series.
‘I’ve seen a lot of rumors going around the internet about Katy Perry possibly leaving idol and I don’t necessarily know what’s true and what’s not,’ Steele, a finalist on the competition, said in his post. ‘Katy is not a bully, nor does she shame people.’
Steele said that he was nervous during multiple steps along the process on the show and Perry demonstrated ‘an incredible ability’ to detect such and figure out ‘what’s holding you back.’
He continued: ‘I love all the judges, but Katy always seemed to be able to look into my soul and tell exactly what was troubling me, or what it was I was struggling with.’

Steele said Perry reminded him to believe in himself and his artistry, and challenged him to push himself and take risks he wasn’t comfortable with to move forward.
‘I’m a better musician and artist after Katy Perry pushed me to believe in my potential, and to exceed my limitations,’ he said.
Steele tagged the Roar songstress into the post, saying he’s pulling for her to ‘stay on’ American Idol during the turbulent time.
‘You’re a guiding light, an incredible teacher,’ he said. ‘And you made me believe that I am my own hero. Thank you for everything.’
Steele’s supportive remarks for Perry came after a source told DailyMail.com that the California Gurls artist ‘feels like her comments could have been removed’ from a past broadcast, as it is not in line with the goals she set in joining the judges’ panel of the series.
‘She went into it thinking she was going to foster young talent,’ the source said. ‘For her good intentions to be misinterpreted it was not what she wanted.
‘She has accomplished so much in her career and is now being looked at as a nasty reality show judge.’
The source said that Perry ‘became aware of the harsh criticism’ aimed at her and ‘getting booed really upset her,’ as she ‘was trying to stay in her lane, do her job and go home.’

Perry is debating about leaving the job, which pays her a reported $25 million-per-season
The source said that Perry has ‘wanted out for some time now, but this season was way too much for her to handle,’ and that she is debating about leaving the job, which pays her a reported $25 million-per-season.
Among the controversies she’s been linked with during the show’s 21st season included an exchange when she allegedly mom-shamed contestant Sara Beth Liebe saying that she’d been ‘laying on the table too much.’
She also raised eyebrows with her feedback toward contestants Carina DeAngelo and Nutsa Buzaladze amid the show’s Hollywood week showcase after saying that they had underwhelmed in their performance.
An insider told Page Six earlier this month that the Firework artist ‘has a unique sense of humor that may not always translate well on camera, but she never has any ill intent.’
The insider added, ‘Katy isn’t fazed by the backlash. This has been a roller-coaster season with a lot of great talent, so she is just doing her job.’
