American Idol: Show slips to all-time low of 6.3m viewers as Katy, Lionel, Luke can’t drive ratings

American Idol is seeing its worst ratings in the history of the show.

On Monday The Wrap reported the series – which was once at FOX but is now with ABC – won only 6.3m viewers on Sunday.

That means the reboot, which stars Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan as judges and Ryan Seacrest as host, pulled in less eyes than the American Country Music Awards which also aired on Sunday evening.

Sunday’s episode started at 8 pm with a 1.3 rating/5 share in the 18-49 demographic.

There was an average of 6.3 million viewers. 

The lows from the show’s Fox days were a 1.4 demo rating and 5.5 million total viewers, according to the site.

When the reboot launched in March, the show drew 2.3 rating in adults 18-49 ad 10.3 million viewers.  

On Sunday’s show, Caleb Lee Hutchinson was the focus as he revealed that he has undergone a personal transformation.

The 19-year-old Georgia singer was asked by host Ryan Seacrest about his change in appearance since auditions after performing Die A Happy Man by Thomas Rhett.

‘I’ve lost about 70 pounds now,’ Caleb shared.

Georgia native Ryan asked Caleb how he shed the pounds.  

‘I just thought, ”Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if, like, I drank water and walked every night”,’ Caleb responded prompting a standing ovation from judge Katy Perry.  

‘The more the Instagram likes went up, the more I wanted to hit the treadmill,’ Caleb added.

Caleb was among the dozen contestants remaining from the top 24 who performed solo routines on Sunday in a bid to make the top 14.

He was advised by show mentor Bobby Bones and Caleb admitted that he was a huge fan of former Idol winner Scotty McCreery.

Caleb joked that Scotty had actually impersonated him as he won the show, so Bones brought Scotty in to surprise him and give advice.

His performance, however, received mixed reviews with country star Luke Bryan mentioning pitch issues and questioning his song selection.

Lionel Richie told him that his voice gave him a ‘crystal clear identity’ and that he was ‘simple and solid.’

Katy told him he had a ‘timelessness’ about his powerful voice that she enjoyed.

His version of the Natalie Cole ballad Inseparable was the top performance of the night and was so good it brought Katy, Lionel and Luke up on stage.

Before his performance mentor Bobby Bones took him to task for his underwhelming social media presence and urged him to communicate with his fans.

And Marcio wasted no time reaching them as he soulfully wooed the judges on the second night of the Top 24 solo round.

‘I knew Natalie and Natalie was watching you on that song my friend,’ said Lionel as he told him he had earned the right to stand tall on stage.

‘I love you so much and I see you and i am so impressed with you and so proud of you, you have come so far.

‘You are growing with leaps and bounds and your soul is making perfect choices. just trust and believe in yourself and take on that posture of your power as you have got it and you can make this whole thing happen,’ said an emotional Katy.

Luke told him that he had given them a ‘world class’ performance.’ as the judges took to the stage to give him a group hug.

Marcio was overwhelmed by the reception he got from the judges.

‘To get here was a lot I am trying to survive every week,’ he said as his baby son watched on with protective headphones.

First up on the show was early frontrunner Amelia Hammer Harris who sang ‘Believer’ by Imagine Dragons.

Bones urged her to show more of her inward style and to project her personality.

Lionel told her he was ‘fascinated’ by her ‘spectacular’ performances and that he enjoyed the experience she brought to the stage.

Luke told her to keep the bar high and Katy told her she wanted to see all her shades in the competition.

Football player Garrett Jacobs then took on ‘Treat You Better’ by Shawn Mendes.

Bones worked with him on his dance moves before the performance and made him practice infant of a mirror as he compared it to watching football game tape.

But he struggled with pitch and falsetto issues and it did not go unnoticed.

Lionel urged him to concentrate on singing and not on the performance while Luke called him a ‘dagger heartthrob’ even though he was not the best singer in the group.

‘You are fun to watch and fun to see grow as you are taking the advice to heart and applying yourself, but you need to see in mind to let it flow and stop thinking about it. You have a good voice but you become insecure about it. It was a bit rocky road and we need it to be smooth,’ said Katy.

Next Maddie Poppe performed a quirky version of ‘Brand New Key’ by folk singer Melanie.

Bones told her she needed to set herself the goal of winning the competition and not to be afraid of failure but to harness her confidence.

‘You are here for that moment, to do a song I don’t know and now I want to go skipping down the beach,’ said an impressed Luke.

‘It is really fun right? You are so infectious and I adore you,’ said Katy Perry as she praised her authenticity.

Lionel told her that her look, sound and attitude all matched and that she was ‘on the road you need to be on.’

Ryan then got her dad up on stage and he awkwardly performed a few bars of the song.

Drag queen Ada Vox then performed ‘Feeling Good’ by Nina Simone.

Ada took Bones through the drag make-up routine and insisted she got a lot less sleep than the other contestants because of the time it took her to get made up.

‘It also costs a lot of money to look this cheap,’ Ada joked.

Katy Perry loved the performance and waved her scarf in support form her seat as Ada got a huge reception from the audience, before dropping to her knees to applaud Ava.

‘You have heard the expression wig snatched, wig flew,’ said Katy.

‘I mean, wow, you are here to win.’

Lionel admitted the judges had initially not known how Ada would fit into the show.

‘But your talent is so grand it begs to put a new category in this equation because you are a force to be reckoned with my dear and I want you to know that,’ said Lionel.

Luke Bryan told her that she had an ‘ability to bring the house down’ and ‘that is what you are going to do to everyone watching.’

After the performance Ada told Ryan she had auditioned for Idol 13 times as he praised her for her persistence.

Rocker Effie Passero took on ‘Barracuda’ by Heart as she told Bones she had a ‘tough’ relationship with her mother growing up but that Idol had opened the door to her relationship with her.

Bones told her to embrace her vulnerability and to use it as a strength.

Luke told her she had not ‘commanded the stage like a superstar but you are one of the best singers we have.’

‘You just sang Ann Wilson better than Ann Wilson and that’s hard to do.’

Katy said she was looking for a star and she could see the stardust sprinkling on her and encouraged her to jump into it.

‘You are not wishing and hoping any more you are taking advantage of everything you have and are enjoying the ride,’ said Lionel.

Alyssa Raghu, 16, then took on Rihanna’s ‘Stay’ and Bones warned her about becoming more memorable on stage.

Bones then made her strut her stuff on a catwalk to boost her confidence and persona.

‘I said stay off my spaghetti sauce,’ said Katy to Luke Bryan, referring to Alyssa’s surname.

Bryan then told the youngster that Katy warned him every day about Alyssa.

‘She is your champion and she is not cutting you any slack. You did not have me until tonight,’ said Luke.

Katy then told her that her tone separated her from everyone in the competition but that although she was trying to work new things out she had everything needed to win.

Lionel then went into a bizarre chicken and egg comparison.

‘When you showed up little bird you were so fragile, take a breath you are 16 but you will be fully grown by Sunday. You have your confidence, you have it,’ said Lionel.

Mara Justine ambitiously did ‘Run to You’ by Whitney Houston and Bones told her she needed to cut back on her trademark hair flips.

And the powerful and controlled performance left the judges open mouthed in surprise.

‘We are obviously spellbound, you have shown us this edgy rambunctious rocking side then you delivered that and showed us a whole other side and other platform of what you can do,’ said Luke.

Katy told her she could sing the phone book and she would be impressed and that she had loved the ‘raw’ performance.

‘You have to bake the cake before you frost the cake,’ Katy told her.

Next, Jurnee sang ‘Flashlight’ by Jessie J and she told Bones that she had been bullied and struggled coming out as gay in high school.

‘I have never changed, I have always been a little weirdo,’ she laughed.

‘That was so beautiful land effortless and you can sing circles around everyone and she knows it,’ said Katy as she told her to embrace her confidence and urged her to sing her something that would bring her to her knees.

‘You are talented beyond your age,’ said Lionel as he asked her to give him her attitude.

‘Don’t make it look so easy next time, you are spoiling us by your effortlessness. You might have to act like you are working for it,’ said Luke.

Shannon O’Hara, 17, then performed ‘All I Ask’ by Adele.

Shannon told Bones that her dad had been laid off from his work and had health issues and that Idol had to work for her so she could help her family out of tough times.

He told her to take the pressure off herself and to remember she was 17 and to enjoy the experience.

Lionel told her that she had a moment on stage and had done a ‘great job.’

Katy praised Shannon for versatility but asked to see more identity and personality out of her and all of the competitors.

Finally Congo refugee Ron Bultongez finished the evening off by performing Robyn’s ‘Dancing On My Own.’

Ron told Bones that he struggled to smile because of his braces and his mentor old him to ‘let America love you a little bit.’

His performance was heartfelt and Luke told him he had connected with his ‘hurt and pain’ despite some technical issues.

‘Once fans latch on to you they want to feel that emotion that you are able to put out there and I think that is the best we have ever heard you from top to bottom,’ said Luke.

‘Do you know how far you have come? A lot of people would have given up. This is a business of struggle, how badly do you want it my friend it? Every time I see you walk out on stage with your new fashionista look you are showing us all that you want it badly,’ said Lionel.

Katy told him he had style and intelligence and he had been ‘super special’ despite his nerves and she told him he belonged and to take confidence in that.

On Monday the contestants will duet with celebrity singers before the judges cut five and the remaining hopefuls compete from America’s vote.
